Go Ahead, Laugh At My Sketch-up, But...

I collected a deposit check for this today.
The whole thing is 13'6" long and 90" tall, knotty alder. 65" in the middle, by others.

How are you going to build that horizontal dotted line?

Just kidding. Congrats!

Wouldn't even dream of laughing. I have played with Sketchup a little and it drives me nuts. Like watching someone use excel and then I can't even make a column. Good job, have fun!!

Re: Go Ahead, Laugh At My Sketch-up, But...

Congrats on getting the check! And selling the job with the help of your SU rendering!

You must be aware of Google's fabulous resource, the 3D Warehouse, in which there are a gazillion items of free content, available for direct download into "your very own" Sketchup model. Aren't you?

This is a screenshot of my PC monitor, and you can see the "home theater" model I have placed in my Sketchup model. I used the search term "home theater," and got many pages of hits.

Try it out sometime. Search for "cabinet doors," "moldings," and more. You hardly have to draw much. All you do is assemble the free content! And a lot of that free content was created and uploaded by yours truly. No copyrights. No releases needed. All free for you to use.

Re: Go Ahead, Laugh At My Sketch-up, But...

Thanks for the comments guys. I will pick up material on Mon.
Griz, hang in there with the sketch-up, this was my 3rd drawing with it. I get really frustrated with it and just have to walk away sometimes.
UpNorth, Your screen shot makes me sick! I didn't know about the download stuff. I'll be checking it out. Color 3D drawings makesellig soooo much easier

Some more of that free content available to all Sketchup users, here are three screencaps taken of my monitor, Sketchup open, after downloading some of the many dozens of available models from the 3D Warehouse, having used the search term "tv cabinet."

Creativity was never so easy!

Re: Go Ahead, Laugh At My Sketch-up, But...

congrat's on getting that job! I love that drawing, that'd sell me!

My sketchup models to date are basic. I love the way that the woodgrain is incorporated in the drawing!

the cool thing about sketchup is the on-line video lessons, without them I'd still be using my pencil/ruler/lotsa erasers!

Way to go

I like the rendering just fine. I would only consider one thing. That is to lower the bottom of the arches so there is a little more reveal between them and the crown.

You may have that in mind and it is just one of those frustrating graphic things. Believe me I know that one.

keep us posted on your progress.

Drawing the arches wasn't easy. I tried to draw the crown but I just gave up.
I'll have to check out more of the you tube videos

Sketchup is terrific for some fairly complicated stuff also. Good to hear that it helped you get that job.

It helped me get the rest of the remodel for the house where this staircase goes also.

Andy.

Re: Go Ahead, Laugh At My Sketch-up, But...

The topic is woodworking and furniture building, and the use of Sketchup to do it, but a whole lot can be learned by going to Dave Richards and Tim Killen's excellent blog. Many of the entries include videos.

Moldings? Trim? Done with curves? Texturning with woodgrain so it looks real? Dimensioned drawings to enable the production of parts? All there at http://www.finewoodworking.com/blog/design-click-build

It is much to easy to use. I am guessing you have not tried. ANYBODY can learn this. It is ten times harder to do what you do on the field.

Give it a shot. I also recommend youtube for free tutorials. Once you really get the hang of it you can use plugins to streamline the process.

I will stress it again and again. Develop the habit of joining all of your separately created elements of a drawing into individual groups as you construct the drawing, and life will suddenly become three times easier with SketchUp.

This is so much more important than I can truly emphasize here....

Well, since people are showing off, I might as well too.

Here is a sweet rendering I did for a client for a 5 piece bath remodel!

Just ignore a couple of the extraneous things, I still have to clean it up just a bit.

Sketchup rocks!
