Fypon Crown Moulding

I have some 18" wide fypon crown to install. Anybody have any experience with cutting the outside corner miters?
Thanks,
Gene

Re: Fypon Crown Moulding

I had to go and find their catalog just to see if there was an 18" crown.
Found one, sorry for the skepticism.
Wow, thats a bigon for sure.
The best way I can see for cutting those corners would be with a radial arm saw. Probably not the answer you are looking for if you don't have access to one.
Short of that I would look at making a jig for a skill saw with enough depth of cut to reach through the deck of the jig and the profile of the crown while it was laying flat.
You will have to find the proper miter and bevel combo and build your jig accordingly. Google compound miter calculator and see if you find one online. I know I played with one once, it worked real well.

Let us know how you pull it off

Re: Fypon Crown Moulding

Just like these guys said, radial arm saw. I've done a decent amount of it and that's the only way to cut it.

Here is a cool calculator for the saw settings.

can you build a wood miterbox and make the cut with a sharp hand saw?

Re: Fypon Crown Moulding

Heck yeah you can!
Ya know power tools have not been around forever.
But I wouldn't do it. The easy way is hard enough.
Do you have access to a radial arm saw? I bet you could find one on Craigs list for less than $300. That is if you have a little time.
How about a beam saw? I would build a jig for one of those before I build one for a hand saw. But shoot, thats just me.

Re: Fypon Crown Moulding

I just did a search on creigs list for radial arm saws.
33 results
There is a sears craftsman saw for $75 8 miles from my house.
Not being a smart ass, I was curious if I needed one like you, what are my options.
See what you can come up with before you cut by hand is all I'm saying

Re: Fypon Crown Moulding

The problem with a Radial arm saw is the depth of cut on a 45. This stuff projects 10" from the cutting plane! I might have to find a 22" Radial arm saw!
Thanks,
Gene
PS- This seems to be a great forum with much knowledge. Thanks for the info!

Re: Fypon Crown Moulding

I got it now.
You want to cut the crown cocked up as it sits on the wall. If you have to go that direction your hand saw jig is where you'll end up.
If you are willing to cut it laying flat with the proper compound miter a radial arm saw may have enough depth of cut. That is something you have to figure out.
If you calculate the angle of projection from the wall the crown sits at, then use that calculator link above to find the bevel. Then see what size saw would be needed to cut that deep of bevel.
Sounds like fun. I have not cut crown that big. I'm a little envious.
If you have not cut crown laying down flat like that before, don't stress to much. You'll pick it up fairly fast if you give it a try.

Re: Fypon Crown Moulding

I would definitely take the time and make a miter box to cut the Fypon. With crown that large there really is no better way. A good cross cut hand saw will make the job quick and easy.

Thats what i would try,..We had to do that with some plaster crown moulding before on a job in Nyak NY. It was a pain tho! I would imagine the fypon would be easier.

Re: Fypon Crown Moulding

you really have to install fypon tight and use fypon glue on all your joints
and make sure any caulk in compatible with polyurethane foam and it must be painted with an acrylic top coat

Re: Fypon Crown Moulding

I ended up making a miter box & using a handsaw to cut it. Very simple & the job came out great! Low tech has its merits! We now have a customer that wants an even wider crown run in an oval domed ceiling.challenges, challenges!
Thanks for all of the advise!
