French Doors
I have a question for some of you guys that install alot of doors. I mainly do kitchen remodels, but on occassion I run into some customers that want a little more done, What would you guys charge for installation of French doors.
1. What would you charge if the door fit in fine with little shimming. 2. What would you charge if you had to make the opening a little bit wider and do extra modifications to make the door fit. Any info you guys would give, would be awsome....thanks... |

Re: French Doors
Some may disagree however when it comes to the little stuff like a replacement french door I figure how long it will take and apply my daily rate. If it will take 1/2 a day then I charge 350 if framing needs to be moved and mudding and taping come into play then I would charge a whole day for the return trip to sand and paint 700.

Re: French Doors
Can you not come up with a guess of how long it will take you and charge accordingly?

Re: French Doors
TNG homes,
I veru rarely run into situations like that. But that is about what I charged because the opening had to meade wider and there is gonna be a return trip for mudding ,sanding trim and paint...Because I rarely do these,... when the customer said ; Alright big fella how much do I owe yah.....And I said 650.....her mouth dropped down some and those eye's got big....And when I was drivein off I got to thinkin ...Let me see what some others charge that put alot of doors in........... |

Re: French Doors
I get quite a few requests for these when I do floors of other interior or exterior remodeling....I do tell the customer up front and put everything in writting to make sure that the jaw dropping thing doesnt become a payment issue....If they want it done for less they can enjoy the sh*tty workmanship from some low balling handyman.

Re: French Doors
I agree, I dont think that she realized all that was involved, if it didnt just slide right in...I did a some work for them in the past and I was more than reasonable on what I charged for the work that I did. I think I even under bided on some of it, but that was when we were swamped with work, but now that things are slowin down a bunch, We'll atleast for us anyway" I had to charge what I thought was the goin rate and being fair at the same time......But sometimes that can be kinda tricky when your dealing with "THOSE" kind of customers.... If she would have gave me some beef i would have told her to go have handy andy take care of it for yah..........lol...then you can wake up every morning drinking coffee gazeing out in your back yard looking through your racked patio door............lol

Re: French Doors
Her jaw dropped at 650????? And you had to widen the opening? What the hell do people expect?. I got 700 for the last one I did that fit into the existing opening. That included demo and hauling away of the old slider, installation of the french door, brick mold and casing.
Did you have to widen the opening enough to need to replace the header?...My customers wanted to get a bigger door and I told them my price would at least double if I had to widen the opening. They got the small door. |

Re: French Doors
Mike,
I agree wigh yah mike, We didnt have to widein the opeing much, The height was fine, just needed about 1/4 inch on each side, then adding some molding cause they used to have a slider, and doin some patchin and painting, I orginally thought 750 was fair, but I dont really put alot of doors in to now what to charge. But after swettin my butt off on her back patio chattin with you guys and talkin with some buddy's, I'll no next time... |
