First Shot At Built Ins

I built these the first year I was in business,1994. They are 13 years old in these pics. Each unit is actually 3 modules, connections are conceiled by the half round trim. Everything is 3/4 birch veneer plywood. Doors are lumber core.
The plans were a sketch on a napkin by the homeowner.

Some of my best stuff was "sketched" on a block of wood or a piece of cardboard.

Yup, I always wondered if anyone ever found my roof math on the underside of the roof sheathing in their attic.Run, rise, hypotenuse. x/12. Common difference. Common pattern A,B,C............Hip hyp., val hyp.

Base times base plus height times height,... squared. I swear I had to learn this siht in geometry class at one time.....but Ill be damned if I remembered it from back then when I was framing.
Oh and Pi (3.14) to.

and radius of an arc if memory serves is:

width squared devided by 8 times height plus half of the height

What clutter. I live in a 900sq ft home with two teenaged boys (and wife). I lived in clutter for a long time now.

Those turned out pretty sweet. But then again how could you screw it up with all the careful planning and detailed drawings?
I'm sure you had nothing but the finest equipment back then too, huh?
This really shows off your true potential. You have a good eye for size relationships. That is not easy to teach.

Hey Leo,
Either one of those boys showing any interest in the family buisness?
I didn't get much work out of my 3 boys. But they all got the work ethic though. Amazing really

I'm sure them might see some of them; they probably see it as some sort of hieroglyphic formula or such.

Most of my "plans" in the college days were on a napkin - it was usually very simple though (ie. - Jenny 234-78XX call me)

btw, very nice looking built-ins, especially for one of your first designs.

2 boys, 16 and 10. The oldest has no interest what so ever. He wants to be a bowling pro. He has a 219 avg w/2 300 games under his belt. The youngest use to be interested but got into video games and is only interested int that. Sucks. I don't think I will be training either of them. It is a dying trade. I wanted to pass it on, but I won't force it on them. My Dad didn't want me to get into this either, said, work for someone else, behind a desk, with bennies. Glad I don't listen.

Had a veritable smorgasborg of tools back then, lets see
wormdrive saw, makita 8 1/4 table saw, dewalt 12" chopsaw, 2 horse craftsman plunge router, pancake compressor, framing square, folding horses, 4' level and 16/18 ga. trimguns. Oh and my toolbelt.
I forgot the most important one..... confidence.

The hos are interior decoratorsSince these units, I have done probably 50,000 dollars in small, but not too small jobs for them and I always get the first call on any carpentry project. Took a complete and thorough ass whoopin' on the built-ins though. Paid off in the long run, establishing a work ethic with them.

I knew that had to be the case. Nice job on the reply.
I have an armoir out in the garage I did over 20 years ago with the same arsinal of tools. Love that thing. It doesn't make the grade for the house any more but the sight of that thing reminds me of a young gun full of confidence and hungry for experience.
I think you may share those feelings pulling out those photos. Feels good too, huh?
You are more than a Framer there stud.

Absolutly no offense to Framers

Thank you for the compliment Gus, and yes it does feel good. Unfortunately, all of the built ins I have done since are a combination of stock cabinets and accessories. I get just as much satisfaction though, when I step back and look at my finish framing as I call it.
It takes just as long to butcher it, because you just create aggravation when you get to the top.

Isn't funny what you can accomplish with a limited arsenal at your disposal. I often look back or drive by my earlier jobs and go, "how the he!! did I do that with only a 'bucket' full of tools?" I can remember when my framing and finish chop saw were one in the same. I'm sure we could all get by with what we started with, but I like being spoiled.

In my opinion, a collection of tools is kind of like a journal of sorts. Almost every tool I own is a reminder of a problem solved or a situation avoided. I have always drooled over tools, but wont make the purchase until it is warranted, even if it's for a colloseum project for my kids.

We did this fireplace surround with a TV built in on top of it. Just a basic unit.
