Finishing Some Build-in

I have a customer that I got to do some build-ins for. I'm building them out of birch and pop. I need so advise on finishing them. I have to paint them. I was thinking that if I paint with a oil base and sand between coats. will I get a nice finish. Is not set up with a spray gun so I was thinking of using a good brush. Will this work?

It sure will , don't get cheap on the quality of the brushes/mini rollers or paint or you will get what you pay for.

Hello JCB,

If you have not painted alot with oil base it helps using Penetrol to condition paint.I am more of a carpenter than a painter but have done some.
If you have other things you can work on in between coats I would try applying with a foam roller if possible. It goes on lighter than it would if you brushed but it dries alot quicker.Make sure you apply a primer also on the bare wood.A light sand in between like you said.If you decide to brush just keep a foam roller handy with a little thinner to fix any area of concern an then rebrush.

You can do it.

Re: Finishing Some Build-in

i use the sherwin williams pro classic gloss on all my custom "built-Ins" with a good primer undercoat, that is sanded after dry.

sherwin williams also has a great primer that goes with the pro classic ask them which one it is.

together you will spend about 70 bucks plus 15 for a good brush and 8 bucks for the mini roller.

SPEND THE MONEY ON THE GOOD PAINT, IT MAKES A DIFFERENCE, been their done that.

Yessss, ProClassic!
Best thing since shirt pockets.
Hard as oil enamel, and dries like latex.
I use oil primer, sand, and
foam mini roller for finish coats.
The ProClassic is really forgiving
and comes out looking like a
sprayed job.
(Don't let the bubbles scare you
they pop and it self levels nicely.
Build thin coats, don't try to do
it all at once)
