Finishing Kitchen

I am doing my kitchen over and I cut the wall out between my kitchen and living room to make nook with bar stool seats but my problem is I am not a finish carpenter.I can do the work but I really dont have the ideas.I wanted to put a column or a finished post as a support from the top of the nook to the header but i'm not sure if I can use a newel post or if I have to have it made or were I can get it.It only has to go from the top of the nook to the header about 4' .If there are any web sites with pictures or ideas on kitchen nooks I can use it would be very helpful.

Re: Finishing Kitchen

Not sure if this is on the line of what you're saying, - - it's not a 'nook' - - but these come off my countertop and are about 4'.

I bought 8" X 8' columns and cut and used the top 4' only.

And here's a pass-thru breakfast bar/kitchen job I'm in the middle of now that will have a 'cased' opening holding up the header . . .

Re: Finishing Kitchen

I don't know of anywhere specific that would have any specialty photos of nooks , as it is not a very commmon thing now days. I think you may have some luck searching on line for articles from mags dealing with older houses, like Old House Journal, or This Old House. Over the years, I know that Fine HomeBuilding has done a few articles on nooks also. Another place is to go to your local Barnes and Noble or such and browse publications in the home improvement section related to Craftsman style houses, as built ins were a pretty common item in this style.
