Finish Nailing Problem

I am fabricating an oak bulkhead out of 1X8 solid oak
(2 sides and 1 horizontal bottom surface).

First I constructed a rough frame from pine and secured this to the ceiling.

Now I am "finish nailing" the 1X8 oak pieces to this frame,
and am having great difficulty with the nailing,
as everything "bounces" so badly as I am nailing.

Is there a "trick" to stop this bouncing?

Re: Finish Nailing Problem

Secure the framing better, it shouldn't be 'bouncing'.

Either use a finish nailer or a brad nailer.

Re: Finish Nailing Problem

OK, thanks for your replies.

I did pre-drill; but perhaps not a large enough diameter??

The framing cannot be secured any better; I used three 2-1/2" screws
into each ceiling joist the bulkhead spans across.

I don't own a nail gun, so that option isn't available to me.

Thanks again.

You can probably rent one for $15 a day. Know anyone you can borrow one from?

Re: Finish Nailing Problem

Can't think of anyone that has one to borrow, but I most certainly can rent one.

Thanks for the idea!

having faced the same thing you are describing i would suggest a faster hammer head to drive the nail before the bounce, or rent a nail gun. you can always pick one up for a pawn shop for little to nothing.

I agree with pre-drilling, keeps it from splitting as well!!
