Everything Gone To China?

I put together an oak handrail today, and I noticed the fittings were made in China. Inspection stickers on the pieces. It was the Crown Heritage 6010 rail. Looked and smelled like red oak to me. Does the mfr ship red oak to China, have them mill it, then ship it back? I paid $31 for each quarter turn. Could have bought chinese millwork at Home Depot for a bit less. Or is it Chinese wood? Nothing against China, like I wrote before, but it doesn't feel right.

I was looking at a flyer From Traders Joe's and they had an add for their frozen fish that said they came up with a novel idea to catch, process, freeze and ship the fish directly to them. They claim the industry standard is to catch and freeze the fish, send it to China for processing, then refreeze and ship to stores.

Re: Everything Gone To China?

I go out of my way not to buy junk from China, but it is almost impossible anymore. When I saw a Bosch jig saw with the tiny "made in china" label, I got this sick feeling that the cause is probably lost.
Most Americans don't realize that war does not always have to be waged with bullets. Economic wars are more subtle, but very effective. China has always been our enemy as I see history and I doubt it will ever change. We are going to find the cheap prices for cheap products to be way more expensive than we thought in the near future.

We don't need any more d..n lawyers for our government. We need some people that understand economics. f the globalists and f china too!

Re: Everything Gone To China?

Even the doors in the condo project are from china. american cherry doors from china. Solid core mdf with cherry veneer laminate is more like it. Most of it I don't like but like you said, look at the label and it all says china.

One thing that got me laughing one day is the side of my framing nails said it was made in the U.A.E. I'm wondering how in the world that ever came about? In the middle of the desert, they are making my nails!

This free trade thing started when clinton was in right? I kinda felt this coming. free trade meaning we are gonna get shafted in some marketplaces. maybe more than we think.

Funny, I thought the same thing too when I bought the Bosch 1587 jigsaw from amazon a couple of weeks ago. I think we are all partly to blame, I feel like a hypocryte (sp?) sometimes when I complain about lost jobs/China/Mexico as I am pulling a $29 dvd player off the shelf. Remember early '80's when basic VCR's were $800 or more? We complain if things are to expesive and we complain when they are made overseas.

Re: Everything Gone To China?

I am based in the U.K.
I recently bought the makita LXT 600 set off E-bay, it was a US import, all of the tools with the exception of the batteries were made in the PRC.
I was pleased with the set so bought the LXT jigsaw in the UK, it was made in Japan, as were all the other UK LXT tools.
I think the low prices in the US could come at the cost of using cheap chinese labour and possibly an inferior product compared the Japanese assembled tool?
We are all guilty of wanting top quality gear for bottom dollar.

Here's an interesting bit about China's imports...

I used to work for a shop that built tooling which was to be used for manufacturing in China. The Chinese government required that all imports which were shipped on wooden skids were REQUIRED to be made of OAK!!! If it was not made of oak, the shipment would not pass through customs!

What a screwed up trade imbalance we have....

I think they were shipping are red iron over there to be milled and then sending it back to the US.

Re: Everything Gone To China?

Interesting stories, especially about the fish. The labor costs must be a heck of a lot lower there. Well, I guess it's a matter of $10/hr compared to $0.30/hr or something like that, right?

I just bought a Makita 12" planer shipped from Makita in Georgia, and when it came, I saw "Made in China". I'm okay with it, but I did notice several screws had to be tightened and the depth indicator was located so that it ripped off the scale sticker when I first cranked it up... little off details like that I never expect from Makita. Ryobi, sure, but not Makita. You bet I checked the tightness on the blade bolts before I turned it on.

Here in Boston, we have manhole covers - you know how much they weigh - they say "City of Boston" then in smaller letters on the bottom "Made in India". Can you believe that?

Re: Everything Gone To China?

I talked with a guy at Home Depot about the tools a few years back, because I wanted to buy a Porter Cable staple gun, and I couldn't find one. the guy tells me well we don't carry that brand anymore. It was like damn you guys use to carry all tools by Porter Cable and he said yes, we did but now Porter Cable company was sold and moved to China, then he tells me that all hand power tools will be coming from China. I don't think there is one tool made in this country. when you have HD, Lowes, Wal Mart,Target,Meijer all bring in products from China what do you expect. we can thank Mr. Clinton for that move of opening the trade window with China. Only if that dambazz Nixon would have stayed out of there in the 1970's maybe we wouldn't be at this point.
