Entries for "secret" rooms

A family Friend has asked me to take on a very interesting project of turning the office accessed from the master bedroom into a saferoom of sorts. Its more for keeping valuables out of plain sight than for hiding from burglers. We are looking for clever ways to conceal the enterence, but the real hard part is finding hardware for such a door... both the hinges and the closer and latch.

Could someone give me an idea or point me in the right direction.

Specifically, it is www.hiddenpassageway.com They have the best quality products and already come with hardware and options.

You can also try:

www.hiddendoors.com or www.nichedoors.com

BTW, as SLSTech already mentioned, you are doing a pretty good job of hiding already since you didn't put your location in your profile.

did one a few years back, cheap and easy. i took the existing in swing door to the closet, then added another door to that one hinged on the opposite side(bi-fold style). finally i added a picture framed wardrobe mirror to that door. i dont recall the name of the hardware, but to open and close the unit you would just have to push then pull on the mirror and it would accordian out and to the left. the hardware was a pin and socket type

I saw some "childproof" locks a while back, I believe in rockler, that used a magnetic key to open. The hardware was mounted on the inside of the door, and no key hole was needed, instead, a magnetic key was provided, which you placed over the lock assembly from the other side of the door, and you could then open the door. I'm not sure if that will help you, but when I saw it, I thought it might be useful for locking a hidden door. I'd ask them what they might want on that wall in their bedroom that could be used as a door- Tv cabinet, mirror, shelves, ect. If there is something to cover up the opening, it's a lot easier than making the door blend into the wall.

Edit- Here is the lock I was talking about:
