Re: Entertainment Center

Gus is pretty close to my time.
A 15'+ install in 5 pieces, I had
@ 45-48 hours of build, 2 days on
install, and 3 days prime and paint.
I'm slow, and don't have the shop
that Gus and Leo do.
I don't talk numbers, but....
I would have more of them than you do.

Agreed... It'll take you longer than a couple days... You dont have a cut sheet with all the necessary pieces, and their exact sizes listed... You're going to be scratching your head for a two solid hours a day.

Bout 45 minutes to put the 3d together and 3 minutes to get the cut list.

If the tv screen is high def, you can sit closer. Too close and the angle becomes uncomportable for the viewer.

If the screen is large projection, like in a church or boardroom, figure further away - say as much as 6 to 9 times. Also depends on the displayed image (text or video).

I have a rear projection tv. 42" across and I sit 14' away. Seems to be good for me.

Sounds better than Sketch-Up.

What's the cost? Learning curve? General thoughts on the system?

Thanks

Cost Free

Learning curve, pretty high after the basics.

A little clunky, and can be temperamental at times. But for the price it is an excellent system. The support through the forum is great. There are a few gurus on the site that can make the program scream. It takes a good computer system with a high end graphics card to make the system fly though. I don't have that type of a system. It has gone through several revisions since I started using it. We are waiting for version 6 which is suppose to be a major upgrade. Can't wait.

It took me about 100 hours to make the program work the way I like it and get the hang of it so I could just use it without having to think on how to use it. The program is not intuitive. It takes memorization to make it work.

It is based on a library of cabinets that you build to your specs the way you need your shop to build them. You can change just about every aspect of the build of the cabinet to make just about any type of a custom cabinet you can think of.

If you have the cash and can afford one of the Thermwood CNC routers you can interface the program seamlessly and have the CNC cut all your nested parts. It has been outfitted to work with a ShopBot CNC also, but that is a paid upgrade.

If you have time to learn the system it can work for your advantage. I know it has sold many jobs for me. Just having the 3D renderings is a big advantage. It has also solved a lot of corner issues when I was using a 2D CAD program. You can view the rendering from just about any angle, from close to far away.

You still seem to have alot of time on your hands though.

How is the work scene Leo? And when do you plan on getting your new play toy?

Re: Entertainment Center

Work is getting busier. Did a few smaller jobs and now I have a few medium jobs in the line. One of them definite, the other pending.

Right now I do have some time on my hands. On vacation down in RI. Using my cell phone as a modem to get online. I was bored and felt like
making the 3D rendering, didn't take much time. I wouldn't make my cabinets using that cutlist though. It was made with cabinets that all have flush sides to the FF's. No scribes what so ever. But you could base your plywood order on it. I just wanted to see the 3D presentation and took no effort to design the building aspect of it.

How's work for you Gus? You able to keep yourself busy along with your guys? Or do you have to go fishing a lot?

If you are referring to a CNC as my new toy, don't count on it being anytime soon. But I am looking for some sort of a wide sander. Whether it be a drum or a belt, I need something to help me along. I have been bringing my panels over to another woodworker friend of mine who has a Grizzly 36" wide belt. Small machine HP wise, but gets the job done quicker (and flatter) than I could ever do by hand. Makes it tougher to get one myself when one is available so easily.

I am pleasantly busy. I'm sure that some of that is luck as there are some good shops that are in need of work. But I have 3 good size jobs in need of install and 2 more big jobs to get out of the ground.
Knock on wood. I hope the luck holds out, but the leads are coming in too.

I still am rooting for you to get that cnc just as soon as you can. That will be an exciting time for you.
Are you still looking for a deal on a used one?

The Woodmaster drum sander is worth a serious look. If you contact them they will set up a play date with one close to you. Take a peak while you have some time.

Hell ya, still looking. I have an auction site one of the guys showed to me. I go there 2 or 3 times a week. They have some good starts but the prices get pretty up there quick. One day, one day....

Re: Entertainment Center

Leo, how big of a drum sander are you lookin to get? My boss just got a 10" for under $600 with 2 extra boxes of sanding belts. It's a Jet if you wanna look it up. Works pretty good, but you can only get belts for the 16" around here for some reason. They're easy enough to cut down to the right size though. It has a variable speed feeder, and there's no support on the opposite end from the motor, so if you need to run anything wider than 10" you can turn it around and run it the other way to get up to 20" of panel sanded down. I don't know how much the 16" is, but it may be worth checking out. I don't forsee having door panels bigger than 20" though, how often would you be doing doors wider than 24"? For us it's good, but you may need something bigger

Trying to avoid the open ended sanders. I have my eye on a 37" double drum.

Friends with tools/toys rock don't they I have a friend that has a 48" drum sander. Did some butcher block counter tops last winter and he saved me a TON of time.
