Dovetails
OK....I'm a little speechless. You big time pros have probably seen this and it's probably been posted here. I love this! You know that feeling you get once in awhile when you're on a roll and think you're hot chit? Things like this is what brings you back down to the humbling level.

Re: Dovetails
I don't think I'll ever get over the speachlessness from watching guys FLY through stuff like that. Just lets you know there is ALWAYS more to learn out there.

Re: Dovetails
Pretty cool. I'm sure it would take me over 6 hours and 30 +/- pieces of wood to do that.

Re: Dovetails
...I'd like to see how long it would take using a different species; something like #1 Eastern Hard Maple...for example...
![]() I'm thinking it might add a minute (or two) to the ticker...the chisel cleanout would definately require a little more force than the heel of the hand can comfortably deliver... Not that I could even come close to the efficiency that he exhibits at hand fitting... I cheat...jig and a router... ![]() Cheers, Ron |

I actually enjoy hand cutting dove tails. I made a bunch of hardware boxes and a couple of boxes for hand planes last winter. Just to get out of the house, and cause it soothes the soul. I know, I know, I was dropped on the head as a baby.

Re: Dovetails
Using a hardwood would make a big difference. Cutting, chiseling, and cleaning out pine is much quicker as shown.
Still a good job!

Re: Dovetails
well, for a box or two, cut it by hand. I just know I couldn't do one that fast and that tight if I wanted to (today that is, I COULD practice for a while and get good). Still, un-frickin-believable!

Re: Dovetails
As I tell my students, try it, and then try it again. take some poplar@ 5/8x2x3, a marking gauge, 1/4" and 1/2" paring chisels, a coping saw, fret saw, what ever; a marking knife, or razor knife; and a clamp or workmate. set it up for a single tail, and go to it. I had seen this vid in the past, and tried to match the time. I was over 4 minutes and not as tight. BUT I was showing off for my apprentice at the time.
Seriously, doing it, even if it looks like crap is still better than never cutting a tail by hand. 2 nights ago I cut a 1/2 blind 3 tail with Mahogany and crap pine in about ten minutes. |

I'm impressed, it's refreshing to see hand tools used correctly. It's time to make some sawdust.
