Dewalt Top 17 Finish Carpenters Contest

Judge for yourselves, but the Dewalt Contest has turned from a test of craftsmanship into a popularity contest (whoever has the most cyber buddies wins).

The leader right now built 3 boxes (nice boxes, but boxes). Compare that to the project in second place... a spiral staircase. I think the stair job (by Stan Foster) is much more worthy of votes, but the toy kitchen pics have a cute kid in them.

If you agree with me, check it out, register and vote for best carpentry and for the good of our trade (you can vote 3 times per day):

Time to get out the vote!

That curved stair project journal is like a "how to" class on stair building... really worth the time to browse.

I had to vote for him, no other finalist deserves to win after seeing his work compared to those guys.

The guy that built the tiny kitchen has been pimping himself on FOG, ever since he compared Dewalt's track saw with Festool's. I think he had som sympathy votes. No doubt, the stair case is a little bit more impressive than the kids kitchen, but we are usually a sucker for a cute kid.

My sentiments, exactly. I looked at all the projects and I think outcome should be obvious... but it is not.

It is getting worse. The toy kitchen is pulling further ahead.

Vote with your...er... vote.

Re: Dewalt Top 17 Finish Carpenters Contest

Stan Foster does amazing work, with very basic tools, and he is very open about sharing his techniques... no trade secrets with him.

He has encouraged me to attempt a modest curved stair project this winter. the guy is a Master, but is down to earth. I have a bias (met him at a trade get-together), but I think he should win.

Re: Dewalt Top 17 Finish Carpenters Contest

I'm amazed how building a set of cabinets, although quite nice cabinets, can be seen as worthy trim work, to be honest. I mean, nice job, great idea and wonderful project. Deserves honorable mention at best.

There are many many other projects with a much higher degree of technical difficulty and real world TRIM carpentry skills involved.

Did anyone see any built up crown or Cornish work? I saw, cabinets, stairs (which does fall in the category, if you ask me), built in office and book case projects, etc, but not much pure trim work shown.

There is a lot of very nice work here. I do think the curved stairs take this all to a new level however. Its the difference between craftwork and master level craftwork.

I agree. If those toy kitchen cabinets had to be attached to each other, seamlessly, and scribed to fit out of plumb walls, etc. then they would be getting closer to trim carpentry.

The staircase involved a bunch of shop work, but had to be mated into a house and the balustrade added on site. And it was all done beautifully.

Cheers,

Bass

I was comparing the 6x6 landscape timber stairs I built last month to Stan Foster's... just to have a laugh at my own expense.

Maybe in 20 or 30 more years I could learn enough to build a set of stairs like that. Just awesome.

KMac,

Stan is giving serious consideration to teaching a curved stair seminar, I would be all over that, if he decides to do it.

He posts lots of "how to" stuff regarding his work at FHB's Breaktime forum. Great to have a master of the trade so willing to share.

Vote for Stan!

I can't believe that Stan is losing. I'm in for the seminar as well let me know if he does it.

I would certainly be interested if he were to give a seminar. Make sure you let us know if it ever comes about!

You got it!

Stan has a nice shop, but he does not have extravagant tooling. Most of us already own most of the tools he has... he has lots of clamps though.

He has great skill and nifty techniques to say the least. I found it encouraging that I might be able to attempt a curved stair with out buying a bunch of new gear.

All the best,

Bass
