Custom Range Hood Help
I am getting ready to reface/rebuild a kitchen in natural cherry with shaker doors. The existing kitchen has a bank of cabinets hanging from the ceiling enclosing a range hood. This bank of cabinets and range counter separate the kitchen from the dining area. The HO wants to take out the cabinets and open up the area to have more vision into the dining area. I have not found a free standing range hood that will go with the rest of the kitchen or not be very expensive. The stove counter cannot be extended back any farther to incorporate a pop up vent. I have come up with an idea to enclose a standard range hood in a wood enclosure and anchor it to the ceiling. Has anyone seen this done? Any suggestions on how to better my idea? The HO is undecided as of yet to put short cabinets on either side of the range hood "tube".

Re: Custom Range Hood Help
If you end up building one, I would not use the under cabinet style hood. I would use a hood liner. Venta-hood makes a very good one as well as stand alone island hoods.

Re: Custom Range Hood Help
There are many beautiful free hanging hoods on the market. If the customer does not want to pay, maybe he needs to rethink the design. I would rather have it correct, within my budget, than some cobbled together detail that will cheapen the whole project, GMOD

Re: Custom Range Hood Help
I made one once that an ho bought for his wall and I later found out it was an island hood so I had to incorporate this hood in his kitchen. It was a lot of work and looked pretty dumb IMOP. I tried to tell him to just get one designed for his kitchen but he didn't want to spend the $$$. He ended up paying me as much to make this thing work as he could have just bought one for and this is the problem w/ doing them this way.
Don't know what your time is worth but unless they have to have a perfect match w/ the detail, color and everything else it's cheaper to buy one. You can get nice ones for around 1500$ if you shop around. If you must build it, you could build a box out of birch, then case it w/ the cherry surround. Just make sure the birch box is solid as a rock, has room for the vent, and that it will hold the weight of the range hood. Again, depends on what you're time's worth. As the builder I don't think it would be cheaper for the ho to have one custom made. If it was, we would all be building range hoods and selling them on ebay!! Re: Custom Range Hood Help
I would build it as your pic shows [Minus the range hood fan] out of 3/4 Birch and then skin the entire assembly with 1/4" Cherry plywood. Then I would use 1/4" X 2 Cherry to trim all the panels to make them match your doors. As others have said they make an exhaust fan that you can mount inside. Also remember all you need room for up the chase is a 6" vent with a normal fan.

Re: Custom Range Hood Help

Re: Custom Range Hood Help
This method that you have designed would sure be less expensive than purchasing a pull-out hood. Those things are outrageously priced.
I think the idea is unique to the cabinet industry. I personally might try something like this in my own home, but not for a customer. |

Re: Custom Range Hood Help
Here is one I built that could be adapted to meet the needs of the OP.
