Curved Moldings..

Here are the some curved moldings from the W&H molder I was working on Friday. The bottom molding (in the stack) is done with a router. The top of the stack is done on the W&H molder. This is the swoop section on a staircase but not in the typical position. It is to make for a less awkward transition between the landings.

The fence setup for the W&H

It goes along with these panels for a staircase

Pain in the ass angles on these.

6 of the same size and 5 more of different sizes

One of these for under the stairs

2 of these to go up the stairs

the last one on the stairs, clipped top to match rectangle on middle landing

Re: Curved Moldings..

Looks nice Leo. Do you use a cradle/fence of any sort for the routed pieces? They look real clean. I've done some arched beaded moldings in the past with a freehand router. They turned out well but it was real intense trying to make sure and hold the router properly. I never thought about using a set up like you have for the molder.

Re: Curved Moldings..

The cove in the flat pc was just a normal route with a bearing. The bead was just freehand with a router. I use the Bosch Colt, nice small router makes for a nice controlled cut. I did the bead in three passes. One pass was a climb cut, just 1/16" deep, then the main pass. But because my router cutter has been sharpened a few times the bearing is now a little big so I tilt the router on the third pass to get a clean cut. I gotta get me another beading bit, or an undersized bearing.

Naw, I'll just cheat it in the field Tom. I will cut the angle on the straight pc, put the curve pc on the wall in the proper position and then trace the angle on the curve. The just cut it on the miter saw.

Is that what it's called, a hunting miter? I just call it a PITA miter.

Yes, but maybe just because I'm always hunting for someone who actually does it . . .

(I just cheat it too, shhhh)

Re: Curved Moldings..

I looked on the CAD drawing and it is about 47.5 degrees on the straight pc. Just cut it on the straight and trace it on the curve.

I'm sure I could do all the equations to figure out the angles, but I could be done with it by then.

Re: Curved Moldings..

The straight piece actually needs a curved miter for the profile to match up perfectly to the curved piece, - - and yes, I hope this keeps you up at night . . .

Re: Curved Moldings..

No it doesn't. The two cross sections just have to be the same length. If it is off by a micron, I have sandpaper.

Re: Curved Moldings..

That looks like easy stuff Leo. I'm not busting your balls but I would have laminated the curved piece that went through your W&H or maybe even both profiles ,just less likely to warp, crack and or move after the install.

I'd trade ya miter cuts

Re: Curved Moldings..

Used Poplar that has been in my shop for a while, it is getting glued and nailed to the wall and is paint grade. The price wasn't there for a lamination either.

I've seen those pictures somewhere else...Hmmmm. I just can't think where though. 1000 seems to stick in my mind.

The same lengths will make them meet at the corners, - - but won't help the meeting of the field profiles, - - sandpaper won't relocate the mid-profiles, - - even by a micron . . .

Just getting technical here, I realize.

You guys are making my head hurt with all that stuff. I'm getting the duct tape to wrap it!

Seriously, nice, nice work Leo!

Re: Curved Moldings..

The curve is terminating at the 90 degree point. So it is essentially at 90 degrees. No sleep will be lost and sandpaper will be applied, no duct tape will be used to protect the ducks.

Re: Curved Moldings..

That is what I was speaking of. The other end is 180 degrees (level). I already did the test cut on that and it fits perfect. Give it up Tom. I'm not worried. If I screw it up I am going to blame you now. I'm gonna pull your butt up from NJ to make you remake this molding for me.
