No MDF in my work. I get good air-tight coped joints I assure you. I'll be coping at least 100 stain-grade joints in the next 3 weeks (installing a Greek Revival trim and columns on a commercial job).

Later this month I'll be in a photo shoot for an article I wrote for Fine Homebuilding Magazine for the Master Carpenter column on guess what... crown molding.

I won't argue with you any more. I'll just say that we certainly disagree on this issue.

Carry on,

Bass

SAY WHAT?

Have you been sniffing the 2P-10 accelerator again?

Inside corners are always coped. The only time I miter is on certain MDF profiles because they are soft and coping a sharp edge doesn't hold up. Also the fact the MDF is more stable lets you get away with glue joint in place of coping. Otherwise, coping is a must in most inside miters for the reasons basswood mentioned above...

Drive a Dodge and a Chevy, if that matters.

A coped joint, as stated above, I believe is the correct way to apply crown.

This is my opinion and is backed up by previous comments in this thread

A mitered inside joint is more likely show when it shrinks, as a coped joint can be "caressed" into a tight fitting position-therefore less shrinkage will be visable.

That's my story and I'm stickin' to it,
Roger

This is a Dodge. If I had known it was as inferior as a coped inside miter I would have gone another direction.
Darn IT Stupid me

Crown moulding cope or miter joints?-truck.jpg

Who is this guy?
You know how when you are at a party and a few people start dancing then more and more and you are the only one not dancing? All of the sudden you either need to get with it and cope with yourself dancing or cope with yourself being the stick with the beer in his hand not dancing.
Either way you have to cope.
Just thinkin aloud is all

Hey Gus, is that you in the pic? You don't look like a pickle smoocher. I for one never dance unless it's slow and personal, I ain't no Fred Astaire, and I certainly ain't a balet dancerGuys in Fords are always in a hurry to get somewhere, those in Dodges are already where they want to be.

I drive a Ford.

However, Mitered inside corners are for those who can't cope.

Here is what another expert has to say:

"Mitering trim joints works, but its not the method most pros prefer. Making an airtight coped joint is easier than you might think -- and more durable too. Coped joints do not require perfectly square corners as miter joints do, and coped joints are also less likely to open up after a few seasons of expansion and contraction." --Coping moldings by Tom O'Brien

When you spend 4 years with a balet mistress, you can pretty much pick 'em out of a lineup.
