Re: Crown Installed $2.97 Ft

That's why you don't understand why anyone who hasn't done something before doesn't quite "get it"....

There are plenty of good ways to cut and install crown. Cutting it flat works fine. The important thing is to have a good, fast, accurate system. Avoid mistakes and work efficiently.

Though I can cut crown either way, I prefer "nested" over flat, for a variety of reasons:

1. No messing with bevel settings.

2. Miter scale is larger, easier to read, and more accurate, so making minor adjustments with angles is easier.

3. Measurements are marked along the bottom edge of the crown, that is conveniently facing up in my "upsidedown-backwards" cutting jigs.

4. My cutting jigs also hold the crown securely and in the ideal position for coping.

5. The "flat crown cutters" are just dimwits and tend to smell funny.

I joke.... it really depends on the crown thickness and size but none the less the pay for how ever you cut it is way down .....

Well, to put things in perspective (with apologies to the regulars), I cut and installed 100 pieces of crown on just one job this year (about the same amount of work as putting crown in 25 rooms).

Of course, the most interesting crown work I do involves "cutting" the crown with a drywall knife. Not for $2.97 per foot ("all foots are not the same.")

Nice volley Bass.

Was that forehand or "backhand" ?

Re: Crown Installed $2.97 Ft

...the promotion sale I am going to have for a month or two, I put a flat rate of $189 to do 12x16 room in crown up to 5 1/4". The Client can select from profiles on my soon to be web page.....that comes out to at min, $3.375 a foot. This will be MDF crown, so material will cost anywhere from $.50 to $1.00. So worst case scenario, I only net 2.375 a foot...but for a couple hours of work, what the hell.

If it is a 12x12 room, with 3 5/8" pig crown, it comes to $3.43 a foot. If the best case scenario happens, I would love to see a few people call and be able to set them up all for the same day. Quick set-up, take down and clean up will be the name of the game because that is where most of the time is. My end game is to drum up new clients....

There are limitations on things like ceiling height and number of corners...

Re: Crown Installed $2.97 Ft

This guy doing the crown at 2.97 probably got a large batch from a place like the re-store for 2 bucks a piece. I still wouldn't do it for that price, but if that's all I did perhaps I could do it more efficiently.

Who knows man, maybe this guy had a great set-up. Super fast in and out. Only really need a few tools to do it. Two four foot ladders with a plank, a small air compressor and a nail gun...throw it up and just walk along. It would take me longer to set up and take down then to hang the crown that way. Couch in the way...one make the homeowner have it moved before you get there, or just put a cover on it and have a plank span it.

I also know a lumberyard around here shut down one of their other yards....TONS of trim at stupid low prices. 5/4x6 poplar at $1.00 for 16 feet. I bought alot of that up and ran it through a hussy for some of the larger profiles....

I usually prepaint and install my crown at $7.00 per foot. Its OK. But doing it any cheaper would sacrifice quality. Keep it real. All carpenters need to band together. Don't sell out and work so cheap
