down here in West Tx. a good trim carpenter shouldn't have to advertise.

Coca Cola doesn't have to advertise but they still do....helps keep them on top....

You're absolutely right about that. The business discipline of marketing has proven that over and over. If you fail to do this, you have no idea what opportunities you are potentially missing. The most successful companies in the world advertise and many fail because the don't do it.

This $2.97 guy has obviously found his market - that is the cost-minded home owner who wants a nice look at a low cost. Some people could care less about shotty work. They don't look at the seams, nail holes, sloppily cut miters/bevels, and loads of caulk - and they don't care either. Looking at crown, (even poorly installed crown) from a distance still looks better than no crown at all (they think).

The trim carpenter is a perfectionist (or at least they should want to be). And the guys on this forum like and appreciate quality work...probably more so that their clients do.

Maybe the $2.97 guy is a framer?

Hey maybe he's charging per sq.ft. of room?

a 10x10 room would be $297.

Re: Crown Installed $2.97 Ft

so for that imaginary 15'X15' room you are looking at ~ $100.00 for the material alone. So if he is really doing it for $2.97/ft installed then man.. he better not mess up a cut/get behind AT ALL!!

to each their own. The homeowners that want quality work will pay for it....you just have to find them....for the guys that want to make money doing slam-bang trim work at rock bottom prices, then thats okay with me...it makes me look better and justifys my prices all that much more.

I'm seeing a lot of ad's for $199 a room for ultra light MDF up to 5 1/4", unpainted. That's for a typical size room up to a specified number of linear feet. They have specific moldings they offer that are available for around $.40 a foot.

Heheh, I use the dummy boxes like in the top [ics, but as a rule, I do not do crown for the puplic. I did one bth and it turned out really good but with the boxes. Now if I could install crown like in the bottom pics.....

It would take me a while with all the different angles found in houses. Would really be a learning curve for me... I think. But when done right, it really looks good.

Re: Crown Installed $2.97 Ft

Crown seems hard at first because you have to cut it different...either compound miters or nesting it. Once you do it a few times its really not as bad as people think it is....if its paint grade....then you can fly through it. And there are guys on here that can move through stain grade faster then I can do paint-grade...its all about just getting used to it.

That's the pure and simple fact. Of course, there's a learning curve, and some steer around curves better than others.

Re: Crown Installed $2.97 Ft

I can crown a room about as fast as installing base.

Way fewer cuts-no furniture to move-no demolishing old base-no clean up from demo.

I use adjustable poles(helping hands) when I don't have a helper.

I also caulk and putty all paint grade in any remodel job.

Makes me money, some times I'll add crown in one room and the customer will add crown to the rest of the house.---------nice------------MIKE

Of course there is a learning curv to anything new or out of our field. This something I keep intending to spend a little time and a few dollars on to learn, just haven't had a real need to do yet. It really adds something to a room. Even when using the dummy boxes like I did in my bdrm and bath. Without all that caulk in th etop pics!

Not for carpentry work, but for gc'ing yes you need a license, you've got to fill out some paperwork and test for a contracting licence...background check, insurance, etc.

This could actually work....IF you added a $300 mobilization/set-up fee. Same thing with the $2.97 (for basic room w/ 8 or 9' ceilings.)

Without the set-up fee, you better be doing a fair # or rooms in the house...with a clause that you're not responsible for flooring protection etc....just lots of fine print.

Re: Crown Installed $2.97 Ft

Well if you ask me the price of good trim work is like a brick off the side of a high rise falling fast and my kill us all in the long run
I ve been doing high end trim work in Charlotte NC for 14yrs and for the 1st time I can't make a living at it.
People keep low balling jobs and sooner or later we re all going to look for new jobs. Basic 4 5/8 crown in a reg room here is like $125 to $160 labor only
but in the past little bit I ve seen it go for as little as $35 per room ...dumbass lowballers don't know their killing the trim market
Charlotte is so bad right now full customs are going for as low as $0.50 per foot and tract is like $0.30-0.40 per foot WTF!!!!
How in the hell can you make any money like that ???
