Re: Crown Install Per Foot?

Well, since I pay about .62 cents per linear foot for mdf crown moulding, half that price per foot sounds horrible. Even half the price for hardwood mouldings in not nearly enough. I usually get about $5-$7 per linear foot for installation depending on the size of the moulding. That includes the cost of material. (mdf)..if the material costs more, like poplar or hardwood,I charge more.

Sounds like you need to charge more for sure.

I used to charge per run, per room . Like 1 run of just crown in 1 room was a charge, 2 pieces( crown and wall apron) was 2 runs, so, 2 charges per room.
A very big area, like a kitchen with a breakfast or a 40-50 ft hallway was counted as 2 rooms. If it had a ton of offsets, bunch of different angles and so, Id up the price a little per run.
Small places like a powder room or small hallway still got counted as 1 room.
I charged more per run for stain grade .

Re: Crown Install Per Foot?

i think half the cost of material sounds right.
lets see 12x16 rm =56lf @ .50 a ft = $28 dollars a rm.(asuming you buy crown @ $1.00lf

wow i was taught by an old timer to charge $20 i made a nice $8 profit. you think i can get into a movie with that?

who said 5 to 7 a ft, your to expensive i must get 3 more quotes

Re: Crown Install Per Foot?

Hang on because this is where it gets complicated.

1. Go to the mill around the corner, about 5 blocks.

2. Buy 100' of 2 3/4" solid poplar crown, pay about .42/ft

3. Go spend a day dragging out tools and moving things and charge .21/ft to put it up.

4. Go buy a pack of smokes, 5 bucks in gas, a 40 at the store and then give the old lady the rest of the 21 bucks I got from a days work.

I really hope this is not a serious question.
I hope for your sake.

I usually factor in the number of corners and scarf joints ,estimate how long it will take me,then tell them how much. Then i break it down into lineal foot price. Every job is different.
Worked for me so far.

Re: Crown Install Per Foot?

i learned from a little italian trimmer.i to asked how do you know how much to charge?

he said,i charge 20 dolla(italian accent), you see that wall over there.

i said yeah, you want a piece of base there its 20 dollar,
you want a door there, its 20 dollar, you want trim on that door,i said yeah, its 20 dollar. you want trim on the window, its 20 dollar.etc.

back in 1985 i thought this guy is crazy who can charge like this, but after goin out on my own i did the 20 dollar estimate and you know,i was 17yrs old and i had a pocket full of 20s i was on top of the world(back then 20 dollar you can acually buy something and still have money left)

today i use pretty much the same method but i use $100,and most times i walk out happy, and always remember the old timers.

I charge 25$ a cut and 2$ a ft. The taller the ceiling the more I charge. I also charge more for vaulted ceilings.

Thats the way that I quote crown, x amount for each corner & scarf, x amount for material, x amount for set-up & breakdown. Also large factor how far is the cutting area from the installation area. We once did crown in an eighth floor condo. We had to cut it on the ground and drop a rope from the balcony to haul it upstairs.

Kirk,

$3 per l/f , $7 per corner or scarf joint.

I'm in the midwest and haven't had a problem with these figures.

Sorry, those are labor prices only---no material.

Sooner, I like your lin. ft./ per joint numbers. Maybe you can help me put a number on this. Its a 4 piece cornice/ beam wrap in some areas. 10' ceilings. Would you use the same numbers x 4?

Kimosabi (great tag btw),

I believe I would use the same numbers x 4, but also consider throwing something extra in for the ceiling height.

Also, are you attaching to metal studs-that might be an extra pricing consideration.

Looks like a fairly demanding job--DON'T sell yourself short.

Like to see some pics of the completed project.

Hope this helps,
Roger

Yes, metal studs, but all interior walls get 5/8 T&G Advantech. Life should be easy, unless I HIT the studs. Her is an early stage before pic. Thanks for your input, It's actually being billed hourly, but I wanted a reference to compare to.
