Dado the back panel 1/2" or so in, - - so you have room to scribe the side panels to en-even walls . . .

Built-in, or free-standing?
Plywood sides?
A little detail could get better ideas.

I like three fixed shelves,
but if it's only two, it would be
the bottom and an intermediate.

Higgs: I would go with a hardwood veneer 3/4" plywood (less $ than large dimention hardwood) and definitely use face frames to hide end grain. Sky is right, fix the top and bottom shelves with dadoed rear panel for support. I recommend shelf pins (either 5mm or 1/4") for the supports which offer a very clean look. There is a great jig and self centering bit avail from www.rockler.com . I would also suggest finishing it off with a nice crown and base detail to give it a "piece of furniture" look. If crown is a bit rich for the look your trying to achieve then incorporate an arched or detailed top rail on the face frame. Good luck!

Metal drywall corner bead makes a quick and cheap template to evenly space the holes that hold your shelf clips.

I usually use strips of peg board to template the holes for shelf clips. You can cut them to the exact size of the cabinet sides, then just flip them over for an exact match on the opposing side. It's a no-brainer to keep everything registered...
