Coping Tools?

I'm sure this has been discussed here before, but what are some opinion's on the different tools or tool attachments you can use for coping inside joints?

I saw an article about a Bosch attachment for a jigsaw that is made especially for coping base, crown, etc. I think it is like $80. Not sure. Anyone ever use one?

Also, what about those 'Cope Master' deals - I don't have a clue how to use one, but am curious to hear if anyone has an opionion on them.

The Bosch tool ........ I had to get one, I mean I really had to get one. It has been on my cork board in the office for two years now. I want to say that I paid $35 or so at a JLC show. The vendor also sold nice wire clamps for crown.

If you do a lot of coping and have money to invest, look in the back of JLC's mag, a company that advertises their has a big coping machine that uses templates.

Re: Coping Tools?

as for the grinder, what kind of disc do you use. i have heard about them used, but i have a trusty saw and a forearm with a 48" circumference. i also have a collins foot on a jig saw.

Re: Coping Tools?

i use the sanding pad and the lowest grit sand paper. It take a little getting used to but it saves your hand in the long run.

Time to come out of the cave and get some fresh air and sunlight I guess.
I use one of these and a razor knife.

Re: Coping Tools?

Good info - man I didn't check this post for 2 days and WHAM - lot's of info

many thanks - I'd be reluctant to use my grinder (which I just recently got) just thinking about the lack of control - but I guess that's true with any tool/technique until you get used to it

Re: Coping Tools?

I use a Collins coping foot on a Bosch jig saw with Bosch 6 TPI blades. There's a great "how-to" by Gary Katz on the CollinsTool.com website. The foot replaces the standard base on you saw and allows you to pivot the saw at most any angle and still maintain contact with the work piece. You cut from the back of the piece so you can see the cut line clearly and the coarse blade leaves a smooth cut. It take a little practice but once you get used to it, it's fast and accurate - especially if you're cutting hardwoods.
What I know about the Cope Master machine is that it's similar to a key duplicating machine on a large scale. It's very expensive and you have to make accurate templates for each profile you're working with. I think you would have to be installing miles of crown and base a month to make it pay for itself.

Re: Coping Tools?

I never thought of a grinder-if I could slow the speed down it would be a great option.

I use a coping saw and a 4 in one file-it's pretty quick and allows me to fine tune the joint.

Try something closer to 60 grit.

Holy dust batman! I know a lot of guys are using grinders out there, but I'm pretty positive these are the same guys who have never tried a Collins Coping foot. You don't know what you're missing!

Re: Coping Tools?

Dang I feel old school!

regular Robert Talbot coping saw and 4in1 file.

For pine Ogee profile it is really fast. Granted for complicated profiles I could see the Collins Foot really being handy.

So how many fingers do you grinder guys have left?

Re: Coping Tools?

i have a collins, i just wondered how the grinder worked at coping. simply trying a new technique, i think i will stick with the collins cause i am comfortable with it and spent the money on it. i can see how the grinder would work with some practice. if i didn't have the collins, i would probably use the grinder.
