Cabinet Hanging Opinion

Question for you all regarding hanging a cabinet. I recently built a 40" tall x 60" wide by 24" deep wall cabinet to hang over a client's front loading washer and dryer. It's very heavy (constructed of 3/4" birch plywood and poplar face frames with 3/4" plywood shelving). I getting ready to mount this and will have the studs behind the cabinet, studs on one wall to the side of the cabinet, and one ceiling joist out from the wall approximately 10 inches. My question for you all: Are these installation points enough to make this big cabinet not sag? I'm just a little worred about it being out from the wall 24" and my last ceiling joist I can hit is at the 10" mark (especially on the side where I can't tie into the wall framing). Any comments? Thanks!

Re: Cabinet Hanging Opinion

Are you sure there is only one joist in that space? I had to ask. Since you are asking here, I will assume there is no access above the cabinet. I think you are at looking cutting a hole in the ceiling and adding some reinforcement.
You already knew that, you just wanted someone else to tell it to you.

Re: Cabinet Hanging Opinion

If I'm reading this right, - - just cut a section of ceiling out from about the 11" point to about the 23" point and install a few cleats perpendicular to your joists.

Then cover it with your well-attached cab.

(Oop, I see Trim40 just said as much).

Re: Cabinet Hanging Opinion

the sides of the cab will hold everything.... like a bracket, with the back edge against the wall, how could it do anything other than pull away from the wall?

like genecarp said... if they are built well, you have nothing to worry about...

Re: Cabinet Hanging Opinion

At a couple of houses across the street from me, I have been checking out the custom cabinets being built there. Very impressive oak (solid & ply), but not a drop of glue on anything (lots of pocket screws though). I guess they don't want the obvious problems with trying to stain over excess glue?
I can easily see these cabinets sagging down the road after the owners load them down.

Re: Cabinet Hanging Opinion

The safe thing to do is add ceiling attachment. There was a lady in my area who was paralyzed years ago from falling (overloaded) cabinets.

Now granted, - - the root cause was determined to be both a combination of the over-loading and the use of carbide screws that sheared, - - but with a cabinet of that size, - - why take any chances??

Especially with todays void-prone and green-glue delaminating plywood.

Re: Cabinet Hanging Opinion

It doesn't really matter how many screws you put through the cabinet into the studs. If the cabinet isn't built up to par then it will sag.

Re: Cabinet Hanging Opinion

That's why I dado everything. If you do that it cant sag. I should have charged more for the island I'm making right now because I'm pretty sure it could double as a bomb shelter! It's a 48" island that will have a granite counter top w/ a 12" over hang half way around it. That will be a heavy counter top!!
