Bullnose Crown Slideshow

I put a little slideshow together this evening of a project I've posted about before but this shows more steps.

The most interesting slide may be the upside down jigsaw clamped to a work bench as a circle cutting rig.

That's VERY cool! Shaping that out of wood would take 6-8 hrs.

Thanks Cole, I billed that job out by the hour. It looks like it will get published in FHB, so I'll likely get a paycheck for that too.

Good work.
I try to never tape drywall in more than one small room. This is my first go at ornamental plaster. Glad you approve.

Thanks, nice to get interesting work when possible.

I've never used real plaster. This is durabond 120 for rough coat and joint compound to finish.

Yeah, for stain grade you could glue up 4 quarters and turn a finial matching the crown profile (like the outside of a bowl). Then drill out the center to match the bullnose corner bead and cut the quarters on a band saw. For paint grade... plaster is a good choice. Thanks,

Bass

That is very cool Bass!

How much time would you budget for each corner if you had to put a number to it? Including making the knife.

Who is the goon you have doing the work?

Thanks Gus,

Knife making goes fast, but next time I will make two knives (scratch coat and final). During the first coat it is easy to drift out and leave a ridge or bulge that is a pain to sand back down. The first coat knife can be rough (scratches are good for bonding later coats), but should leave the plaster back an 1/8" or so.

The total time was about 3 hours per corner (I did 6). One or two would take almost as long as 6, if you get my drift.

Regards,

the Goon

Undoubtedly, the work is top shelf. But I'd sure have that Jack-Leg get a shave... and maybe a haircut.

Hmmm.... so about a hundred a corner?

Looks great, but I can see a color difference on the corner.

Fortunately more people see my work than see me... I sneak around behind the scenes, do my thing and disappear.

I get haircuts when my work van needs an oil change (hair cut shop 100' from the lube shop)... both take about the same amount of time and need to happen with equal frequency.

Charge $200/corner!

Actually the color is good, it is the sheen that is different on the pic. The plaster ended up glossier. After I took that photo, the builder touched up the corners with a clear matte finish product in a spray can...worked great.

Re: Bullnose Crown Slideshow

hi Bass, lots of clever ideas there. Especially amusing: the upside down jig-saw circle-cutting rig. Although I must say I'm rather surprised a man of your talents wouldn't just freehand it.

Now an actual question: what is the brand of knife you are slicing up? I couldn't make out the name in your shot.

8" Marshalltown Knife with a Durasoft handle... nice knife to cut up, but I had left it in a bucket of water for a few months accidentally... buffed the rust off and cut it up.
