Block Plane

I'm looking to purchase a block plane as a gift for a finisher I know. He's been throwing me a ton of work and mentioned he needs one.

I'm looking to spend up to $60. What do you all feel is the best plane in this price range? Stanley? Grizzly? Kunz? Other?

Thanks

That's a nice gesture I'm curious to see what others say, but I use a Sanley low angle plane and it seems to do everything I need...$35. Throw in a set of drill bits and you'll have a friend for life!

Interesting planes bone saw. A bit pricier, but unique. If I was a wood worker I would probably want one since I'm so artsy fartsy. I'm wondering how well they work? I'm assuming you have used them, what's your feedback? Thanks

Re: Block Plane

I have a full set of these planes I picked up in japan a few years ago, from small concave and spoon planes the size of a pack of wrigleys up to the size of a brick. Performance, these are the lamborghini of planes nothing even comes close, and they are nice to look at as well, I keep mine on display on a shelf in my house

Thanks
The block plane is been used for paring end grain tradionally, take a look in his tool bag and check out the angle of the blace he uses and get something different. He is never going to use another plane then the one he has now unless it has a different funtion. Stanley, and anyone else that has quality steel and clean castings..............nice gesture

Re: Block Plane

I think the Veritas planes from Lee Valley tools are the best value for the money. There high quality tools that can stand up to daily use and abuse of a finisher, I would have to say that my favorite tool is my Veritas apron plane.
