Adjustable Shelf Holes

Looking for ideas on what everyone uses for drilling adjustable shelf holes in bookcases, cabinets and other items where adjustable shelves are used. I currently use a Rockler JIG IT Shelving Jig. It works great for small cabinets, but difficult to maintain spacing when drilling a tall cabinet. Let me know, what you have found or have built that works for your jobs.

Re: Adjustable Shelf Holes

I just use a plywood strip with holes in it. I have several of them of different lengths.

Re: Adjustable Shelf Holes

Blackte, I use the Rockler jig on all of my cabinets now no mater how tall. You just have to move the jig and use the pin in the spacing hole. The key I think is to clamp the jig down to the piece each time you move it to keep it from shifting. If you have problems with the jig just cut a piece of hard board peg board the height of your cabinet and use the holes as your guide. Just make sure you put it in the same orientation top to bottom on both sides of the cabinet.

Re: Adjustable Shelf Holes

Rocky, thanks for the info on using a clamp with my rockler jig, and also using peg board as a template for checking the holes. I just did a large walled unit, and some of the holes got off, and had to explain to the homeowner what happened. I'm guessing it was a combination of me holding the template and trying to drill all at once. I did find a nice unit Veritas Shelf-Drilling Jig, but it's a little pricey, but looks really well made.

I used to use a jig to do line boring but I found it to be a PITA. You have to pay attention to get good consistency and it really wore me out doing multiple runs of tall cabinets. I ended up buying this 13 spindle Conquest and haven't regretted it for a second. Delta makes a less expensive model with plastic gears which can be had used for around $600.00

If you use a forstner bit you won't wear out your jig so fast. Only cuts on the face, not the sides.

Re: Adjustable Shelf Holes

Take a look at the festool router with the LR 32 guide rail. It gives you a guide and indents that the router will stop in to correctly space the holes

Re: Adjustable Shelf Holes

In a bind, I made a jig out of 1/8" (I believe) plexiglass or Lexan, can't recall. I made the holes on the drill press and now I have el cheapo hole drilling jig.

I had the one from Rockler but I can't seem to find it in the junk pile...er..shop.

Re: Adjustable Shelf Holes

On the few that I have had to do, I use a section of pegboard. Works out great and is basically disposable b/c of the low cost.

I used that Delta for several years. I agree with you Bergy, if you are going to do much cabinetry a line boring machine of some kind is the way to go. Soooo much faster than drilling a single hole at a time, more than 13 times because of the dedicated nature of the station.

I think a line boring machine has to be the best tool in the pay back period department. That $600 is recouped very fast.

If you are going to use the system holes for your drawer slides a double headed machine is a must. Coming from both edges and hit the hole pattern of the slides is very difficult.

Re: Adjustable Shelf Holes

The Festool LR 32 system is pretty nice. Quick to set up and you can use it in the shop or in someone's kitchen.

Pegboard and the forstner bit...

It doesn't hurt to have shop help that will clear the dust and shavings out of the holes for $.05 per board and a grilled cheese sandwich...

Re: Adjustable Shelf Holes

Wow! What a good & inexpensive idea. I can imagine what could happen if you failed to circle the correct row of holes?
Thanks,
Steve
