Above Shower Frontspiece

hi there all
I will be remodeling a bathroom with a full size alcove bath/shower. We'll install shower doors. Currently above the shower is a dropped ceiling in the form a slight arch, about a foot drop at the most on the sides. It's nice, I'd like to leave it or do something similar with a tile ceiling, also because the house has to more of these. I am thinking about tiling this and if so probably preparing it with Durock but in three straight lines, no curve. I would like to create some kind of frontspiece, possibly out of wood, like an inset panel, do you think it will hold up with moisture, if it is painted properly? If so, what kind of paint would be best?
Thanks!

Re: Above Shower Frontspiece

I don't see a big problem...I don't know much about paint, but perhaps something along the lines of an exterior trim paint.

We've done exterior "raised panel" details in the past and used MDO. It paints great and is more rot resistant than laminated plywood or dimensional lumber.

Also, is there an existing bathfan, or are you installing a new one?

That's my 2 cents.

Re: Above Shower Frontspiece

Hey, nice work
No, this is simpler, the bathroom walls continue straight into the shower, same continuous tile surface. However, above the tub only, the ceiling drops down a foot and creates a drop ceiling just above the tub (and will be above the shower doors which will sit on the tub surface. i could tile it, or remove it; if anything it would be like a transom over a doorway. it's really like making an arch out of a header between a dining room living room, or simply covering the header with something more than sheetrock-- creating like a nice panel where the header is
Thanks
