2x6 Rail Install
Nothing too fancy here. Plowed Oak 2x6 rail with oak 2x4 mounting blocks. There is a tip here... a simple 2-piece rail holding jig for solo installing. The jig is just clamped to the 2x4 block and then insert the rail and hold in place with another clamp and attach.

Re: 2x6 Rail Install
Hi Steve,
I use 3" GRK trimhead screws at each block and 5" trimheads through the returns and into the studs at each end of the rail. Regards, Bass |

Re: 2x6 Rail Install
I also work solo quite a bit, Thanks for the tip.
The GRK's are great, pricey but worth the money. Love those Collins clamps, I bought a bunch of them this summer after seeing you use them in several of the pictures that you have posted. Another great tip from Mr. Basswood.

Re: 2x6 Rail Install
I need to get myself some of those clamps. what brand are they? Looks like they could be very useful in tight spaces.
Nice job, thanks for posting. BTW, did you make the rail? Dave |

The GRK is carried by several local yards here. Here is the retail locator (or you can buy them online): http://www.grkfasteners.ca/grk/servlet/GRKRetailLocator I drill a pilot and a small countersink for the trimhead... helps those T-10 bits last much longer. I also like the color coded GRK torx bits. Bass |

Re: 2x6 Rail Install
Hey Neo,
The 5" trimheads are nice for those 3" returns and getting into the framing. I ran them into 12 rail returns yesterday and did split one return... had to back it out and glued and clamped the return back together (it was grain matched to the rail). I carefully re-piloted it in another spot and met with success. They have a larger trimhead and take a T-15 bit. Bass |

http://www.collinstool.com/base.php?...ter_clamps.htm I did not make this rail, it was a rather large order (150') for 13 flights of stairs. It is an easy profile to mill for small orders though. Have a great day, Bass |

Re: 2x6 Rail Install
Impact on the torx bit? I have found that it just breaks the bit, I also used GRK screws and tips....very nice stuff.

In hardwoods, I pre-drill 1/8" diameter pilot holes and drill small trim head countersinks with a Unibit. I also know just when to stop driving, by feel and by sound. |

Re: 2x6 Rail Install
Most places around here carry the exact packages you show there. Pro-Paks they're called I believe. I also did not know they came so long.
Thank you though for the link on the clamps. I am getting ready to purchase a few myself and I will try those out next. Always need some more clamps.
