Yard Signs.

What I am trying , is 18" x 24" yard signs put in strategeic locations thru out the towns I have jobs going. The signs are directing the viewer to the job site. The job site sign is larger, has my buisness name with service and phone number. The yard signs are offering a remedy to their roofing problem, in my case, " Never Re-Roof again " tells what the product is then the sign has the address of the job.
I will let you guys know how things turn out.

Has anyone done something like that before?

Re: Yard Signs.

Before you go posting signs all over town, you better check on the local laws regarding signs. You may be required to get a permit for each sign, which can get rather costly. You'll also need to get permission from the property owners where you intend to place the signs.

Or, you can always pay the fine for illegal signs

Re: Yard Signs.

There's a few buliders in my area that do this. They have smaller, preprinted signs with their name on them with arrow's printed on the sign. They direct you to where they have houses under construction. They seem trashy to me, but they may be effective. I'm just not sure. Let us know how you make out. Perhaps that method has merit.

Re: Yard Signs.

Hey Red Cedar,

Last year I gutted this entire house. As part of my renovation project, I had 50k worth of landscaping done, including winding walkways, stamped and acid-stained cement, and beautiful retaining walls, not to mention shrubbery and plants galore. A good friend of mine did the work. He asked if he could place a sign on my lawn for a few months WHILE the work was going on AND AFTER its completion. Of course, I, the homeowner, allowed him to do this.

Well......did he ever get the business!!!! People were ringing his phone off the hook. He got a ton of business from that one, single sign alone. If I remember correctly, he said he got six huge contracts because of that sign.

So, ask your current customers if they would allow you to do the same. You could even offer them $50 or some type of gift certificate, say $50.00 to a well-liked restaurant in the area, for instance, on any new business generated from the sign on their lawn.

MD I know what you mean about being trashy, at first I thought of the signs I have seen, ( Lose Weight ) and others like it.
But I am looking at what real estate people do. They have signs directing them to locations.
What I offer is not very common, so I am hoping for some curiousity to at least drive by the location.

Re: Yard Signs.

I'm about to use yard signs on every project we paint. Those along with the lettered vehicle will hopefully pull a job or two. Heck, one job from the signs, they pay for themselves. Good enough for me. I have no intention of using them anywhere but in my customer's yards. I'm thinking about adding one of those flyer canisters to them as well....that way people can get more info if they want.

Re: Yard Signs.

I don't know if this is exactly the same thing but when I was first planning on going into business, while I was still working for another guy, but with his consent, I built a frame and had a local sign shop produce two of those corrugated plastic signs each of which was 3'x4' and simply said "Master Plumber" with my phone number. I installed them, back to back, in my frame made of 4 x 4's and it was literally less than 1 hour before I had my first call. That sign really was what launched me into business and it still produces. I'm getting ready to redo it, make it larger, nicer, a little more info and add some lights (it's currently useless at night). One thing I'm convinced of though is that "less is more", those yard signs are small to begin with. You can't load them up with little print and expect anyone driving down the road to be able to read them. Just keep it basic and to the point with large letters and a large phone number. I think blue or dark green letters on white background is best, avoid red and whatever you do don't use yellow, you can't read it at all. That's my two cents worth.

Re: Yard Signs.

Check you local regs
That would be verboten in my town and I'd get a call by 8:30 AM to remove them
If I didn't a town employee would be sent I would get a bill for it, and risk a fine

My folks town you can't even put up a sign in the yard at a residential job
You can, however, put a small sign in the window of a certain size while you are at the job

Re: Yard Signs.

That's great to hear. I ordered 10 of these signs and they should be here by the end of the week. Last yr we did a lot of newspaper ads with minimum success so I'm anxious to try these.

Re: Yard Signs.

Not only do I put yard signs out, we are required to have them. So neighbors and local officials can check you out! The free advertising is just icing on the cake!
