What Has Been The Most Productive Form Of Advertising For You?

I would like to know what is the best form of advertising to least. I know this is a broad topic.

Include anything that has worked well for your co and what has been the best.

Wow, I didn't expect websites to top the list. How does the lead come to your site? Are you listed on the yellow page site when they look up a number?

Best form of advertising recently has been our reputation/word of mouth. After that it's our website. I'm currently redeveloping the website so that it becomes the main source of new leads.

I'm wondering how well those signs that contractors stick in the front yard of the residence they're working on work.

Most people don't use yellowpages at all... the book or site. If someone is looking for a plumber they'll just type "plumber in pheonix, az" or something similar into google. The trick is to have an optimized website to be high in the rankings.

Google slate repairs in or around Richmond Va and I come up. It's what I'm looking for. Not flooring work. Google tin roofing. You need to optimize for what you want to do.
I cancelled all Phone book ads years ago.

I agree, word of mouth is best but other than that i have advertised in a local paper with good results. Of course you get some shoppers but it makes up when someone calls for a repair & you wind up getting the whole complete job.

I need to look into a website also as this is the wave of the present & future.

make sure your website has a contact us page with a form to fill out which goes to your email with customer info budget etc.. as well install google anylitics to track your visitors. Seo is the lifeblood of the website so make sure whoever does it understands SEO.

A glossy coupon magazine that is mailed to "home owners" only and comes out every 60 days called "The Market Place" has been really good for us. Most of the other ads in the magazine are for salons, day spas, decoraters, pools etc.

Do you guys use a local web design company?

Or a online service?

I've thought about the idea, I like to support the local economy on some things, but advertising and accounting is somthing I like to hire someone from another town in.

Don't want my business floating around the country club.

IMHO, there is no "best" form of advertising. The best results come from consistently having your name in front of your target audience in multiple media. Newspaper always works better when accompanied by TV. It takes about 5 exposures to capture the prospect's attention. Even a website works better when you drive traffic to the site through other media.

I have records of where every lead came from since 1982. It ebbs and flows, but when we ask the prospect, "What caused you to contact us today?", it's usually a 3 part answer. "Well, I saw your newspaper ad, but I've noticed your trucks and signs in my neighborhood." or We've seen your ads on TV, driven by your building, and you built a room for Aunt Millie".

Everything works sometimes, and sometimes nothing works. Overall, it's a little bit of everything that does the "best" job.

Yes Bill you are right on with the (i see your trucks) really works. I have heard from several people not looking to have something done saying like oh your the guy with the big black dodge that does roofing? It's very surprising that people come up to you out of nowhere & start chattin. I'm not in a small town either near chicago which makes me feel even better. Maybe they like how i can't handle the moron drivers & handle the situation my own way.

For us (we sell advertising!) it is trade association membership/participation. The dues (and relationships) return many times more than their cost.

Re: What Has Been The Most Productive Form Of Advertising For You?

Website is best by far, still about 20 leads a week.

In this order:

1. Organic search
2. Pay Per Click
3. Local and local directories

Re: What Has Been The Most Productive Form Of Advertising For You?

You can just reg a aname and build one yourself with several editors. Most registrars have a website builder you can get as soon as you reg a name.
Reg the name yourself and keep the reg data to yourself. Don't leave it up to some site guy to do it for you.

There is no such thing as a finished site. It gets added to every week.
