Re: Web Stats Disturbingly Low

Chris, your ranking seems to be okay, so it appears maybe the search volume may have dropped. I'd have to dig deeper to know if this is the problem. Maybe others here can share to answer your question from an industry perspective.

Either way, what kinds of advertising or promotion are you doing other than your site? I'd be looking to stop the hemorrhaging before it gets too bad again.

Re: Web Stats Disturbingly Low

Can't say as far as web stats, but business fell into a black hole the second week of October 2011 and hasn't come out yet. Feels like the summer of 2010 for me - things went dead the third week of May that year and nothing we did could move it till the end of October, 2010.

Not just me, 8 out of 10 contractors and reps I talk to say it's terrible to spotty. About 20% say they are busy or doing all right, and a lot fo those seem to be in commercial work.

Re: Web Stats Disturbingly Low

Rank checker shows for me that "chester county custom decks" is 167.

marketing.grader says you only have 5 pages indexed. Are you missing a sitemap or some other gizmo lol.

Your page title needs optimization
You need more content
You need more content with your keyphrases in it, seo writing I believe its called
Your services need their own page with content on them
Where is your phone number, im not looking to click on a contact us clickie thing, put it on the top of the site
You need a contact form on each service page, maybe one on the home page too
Your SEM Rush traffic rank is $205 which is better then my site, but your only showing 3 keywords, in comparison I show 48- 54, which isnt spectacular either.

Numbers are all relative...

Are you doing anything specific to drive traffic - SEO, advertising, etc?

thats what I'm getting at, I am neither doing or not doing anything differently.

there are certainly any number of things that I could/need to do, but that's not quite the core of my concern, what is concerning me is that I've always had decent traffic, and got consistently viable leads,

and as you can clearly see by the graph, the stats for this year are downright disturbing, its like the inverse of what it should be for this point in the year, and the page load/unique visitor delta is razor thin

my main concern is not what I could be doing to drive more traffic, but what is causing my current traffic to be so abyssmal

I won't be presumptuous to say I know what your problem is without proper investigation, but sometimes inaction can be the problem. If nothing has been changing, that can leave you vulnerable if an ambitious competitor is outgunning you. That's something I would be looking for anyway.

As I mentioned initially though, I didn't see anything blatantly wrong with your search engine positions. I did notice the weakness that JBM mentioned for Chester County, but you have other search terms that are strong. Maybe some keyword research would provide better insights. I'm only doing a high level flyover which is inconclusive.

How's business other than from web? Have you talked to a number of other contractors, reps, etc? Is there a general trend of a lot of business NOT being what it should?

Your stats are pretty good. A bit better than mine.

Google likes change. Updates to your site, links, blogs, etc...

Have you changed your advertising plan?

The website's keyword ranking seems to be fine, so I don't think it has to do with playing nicely with Google.

Re: Web Stats Disturbingly Low

Could have something to do with Google's new ranking updates? I read on some search ranking signals site that Google has been making all sorts of changes recently.

I don't really know how to check ranks, but this might be something worth looking into.

Hope it turns around for you!

This is a good point. If you were generating traffic from "spinning" articles to generate back links... there is a chance you got flagged by Google and, as a result, are seeing your rankings suffer.

"Spinning" is still very effective but, from my understanding, they really cracked down on the quality and "uniqueness."

Chris G. makes a good point about Google liking updates. I'm no expert when it comes to that stuff, but that statement seems pretty accurate! We've found just updating our FAQs and Terminology pages has helped (we still need to implement a blog!).

This could very well be true:

Check out this Over Optimization article.

Since this may be a bit overwhelming for many contractors here, let me highlight a few things that I see A LOT on contractor sites that could very well be getting targeted in the changes Google is making.

The first one and probably most common (which I have frequently sounded the alarm here that should NOT be done) is keyword stuffing the footer of the page. Chris's site is not violating this one, but many members here are and the gauntlet has long been predicted to fall. So far, Google's response has been to not reward the practice, even though many people here think it somehow helps. I have stated that sites have been ranking in spite of the practice, not because of it. It is now expected that Google will be actively punishing it.

Very close behind that is keyword stuffing the page content. Excessive use of keywords on the page could get penalized. Determining where Google will place a tipping point is subject to guesswork, but I think a good rule is if you write to humans, it will be fine. If it sounds spammy to a human, it may very well sound spammy to a Googlebot.

Another one that I've seen plenty often is multiple pages with very similar content to try to target different key terms. I'm not picking on Chris, but I'll use "deck builder" as an example only because this is his thread. In this example, the offending site uses "deck builder city A" and "deck builder city B" and about the only difference between the two pages is swapping out A for B. Google is plenty smart enough to see this.

This one may or may not affect a lot of contractor sites, but for a long time, "SEO experts" were spamming article directories with useless content simply to get backlinks. The concept is, "write lots of articles and you get a lot of backlinks." Google has long devalued this technique simply because the article directories were not policing for quality and anyone with an Internet connection could flood the directories with sludge. IOW, it was too easy to manipulate. If Google is now penalizing all of this manipulation, it would be well deserved. I think they are.

Google is hush hush as usual about exactly what they are penalizing, but an evaluation of their mission to deliver relevant results and observing the manipulation that many sites are using makes it reasonably easy to predict some of it.

your problem is that your happy with the status quo. Your not concerned with what you Could be doing. You just want to keep doing the same thing and keep on getting the same business.

How well did that work for Kodak? They just kept on making 35mm film and did nothing different. How about Blockbuster, just kept on doing store rentals when everything was shifting online. They are now out of business.

You need to step up and start worrying about what you SHOULD be doing. You in Construction, people are doing millions of searches a day for every topic under the sun to do with their homes. Many of these peoples needs are not yet being met! With a little bit of work any site can bring in loads of traffic and produce leads galore.

You need to find the people out there that are searching for a solution and show them that you have one to offer. Start with keyword research to find some low hanging fruit. Then start producing content that perfectly matches that fruit. Next do some basic link building. Last, start answering your phone.

I agree with what some other people have been saying. Just add lots of content to your site. Keyword-rich content. Don't just add things about your pricing or your customer service, write about the topics that people are searching for. You can use the Google Keyword Tool to find what people are searching for in your region.

Yes I couldnt agree more. Content is King when it comes to the search engines. Add keyword related content for your industry and use some basic Seo tactics and you should be able to see some addtional traffic.

Just expanding on what has been said... Combine SEO tactics with great content and you have a winning combination.

It is possible to get high rankings with only SEO, but they won't last! Google is constantly looking for, and implementing, new ways to reduce the amount of garbage that hits their front page.

I have several websites running and it was funny to see how many people in the Top10 disappear after the last series of changes Google made.
