Toll Free Number Warning

If you are wanting a toll free number for your business beware. I got one from a site for $10 / month. I thought what could go wrong, I tested it, received faxes and calls with no delay or problems. My problem now is I get all kinds of random calls on it. Apparently the recycle rate on these numbers is such that I have had calls for trailers, bikes, and even adult toys. It is really annoying and I have gotten tired of answering them. I can't change the number now b/c all our marketing materials are printed. Just thought I would let everyone know something to think about when going down this path so that you don't end up like us.

Why did you need or want a toll free number?

Most non-residential numbers get recycled...1-800/888 or not.
Mine is not of the 1-800/888 variety and I constantly got calls looking for this person "Anthony" something or another.
One day, after fielding a half-dozen of these "Anthony calls" and telling the caller "Anthony hasn't had this number in over 5 years", I decided to see:
Who the heck is this "Anthony" that is so popular with bill collectors?
Turns out, "Anthony" is in jail
I started telling the callers that "Anthony" had moved and his "new number" is (609) 292-4036 <~~~ NJ DOC phone number
The "Anthony calls" stopped shortly thereafter

But that is not the end of it....now I get calls looking for a "Jackie" .....oh well, back to square 1

The number can be forwarded to as many phones as you want, ringing simultaneously, it will also accept faxes and email them to you. It is quite convenient. As far as toll free goes I don't think it much matters in this day and age but I couldn't find a service provider to do it for the local area code. I didn't really look to hard, it didn't matter to me.

I have had my (800) Number vor over 20 years now and I still get calls for the previous owners of the number, some Energy and Insulation business.

I also have been offered over $ 1,000 for it a few years back.

I'm sure it's worth far more than that if you've been the only user in 20 years.

Re: Toll Free Number Warning

I have had mine since 1992 and I never got any calls that weren't for me... hmmm... I have noticed that my price for the service has gone up over the last few years... But with marketing and clients who have had it for over 15 years its hard to get rid of it...

Re: Toll Free Number Warning

When I got my 800# I was being bothered by the same telemarketing comp day. 30 times a day they were giving out my number on their recorded message, After a month of calling them and them not changing their message I called the
MI State attorneys office, and their local police.
They must had gotten there ass's kicked because it stopped in a few days
