Haha ok I'll explain a bit. Twitter is like a micro blog. Your posts can only be 140 characters max including spaces so people usually post a quick thought, link to something interesting they came across or what they're doing, again keeping it short. It's part of a social network so you can have people subscribe to you aka follow, and you can follow other people. Following someone allows all their posts, or as the Twitter community calls them.. tweets, to be displayed on your home page.

I like the idea of using a micro blog via twitter for daily/update posting that may not be totally relevent to your website or business all the time. Then you can use your official company blog for more relevant and fuller length articles. Your short daily updates won't get in the way and bury the important stuff.

I think it can be just one aspect of online brand building combined with a greater overall marketing effort. But just like anything else, you need to keep up with it.

Yeah I usually have my pulse on this internet thing but I have no clue wtf he just said.

To be honest not sure I want any further explanations after that first attempt on his part

I don't have enough time to work on stuff that is relevant.

Like posting in this thread.

rbs... you mean neolitic or me? :p

tgeb, twitter takes less time than reading through this thread does.

for those that are not presently interested, it will still be something to keep in the back of your heads. how did we all feel about websites say 5-7 years ago. how do you feel about them today? social networking will evolve much faster than the need for having a website did. be sure not to just brush it off your desk.

I think it's safe to say
that there are at least
four of us who you could
safely put in the "no" column.

Maybe I'm not getting it but who the hell would I care enough to follow them online in everything they are doing?

And who the hell would care enough to follow me in every little thing I am doing?

Let me try it...

*** Tweet *** Hey I'm about to look out the window

*** Tweet *** okay I looked out the window, it's getting dark, I'll post back at my next exciting thing I am going to do

*** Tweet out***

*** Tweet *** okay I'm back, I stared at my computer for about 15 seconds hoping for an answer to appear as to why I'm not understanding the importance of this

*** Tweet*** I looked down at the floor for a second, then I looked at the clock, I'm now looking at the computer again...

What? 140 characters? thats like half a thought process for me, is that a blog for people who are both slow typer and slow readers? Or are people texting to it on cell phones? Does it help get me work? Does it help me with resources?

My wife told me about Twitter, I couldn't see the reasoning behind it. I am getting into networking these days, but I just don't 'get' Twitter.
StairJunkie, I checked out your tweets and to be honest, still don't 'get' it. OK, mini blog - you built some treads that reminded you of BBQ, it's cold and you wonder when spring will get here...just don't get why folks would follow your tweets.

I'm not slamming you, honest, I just don't understand the need or reasoning behind the tool you're using. How do you see it helping your business?

silvertree your doctype declaration is showing at the top of your website. you're missing a character that's making it show. you should fix that or else your page is not valid xhtml which just slightly hurts your seo.

I don't think anybody is knocking
you StairJunkie.
It's just hard to take anything
called twitter very seriously.
If it were meant to be taken
seriously, it is certainly a case
of poor "branding."

I got someone a few weeks ago to fix that and redo my site, I'm waiting to hear from him. I'd do it, but I don't know how.
By the way my blog goes live tonight. I do know about Twitter, but I'm making a venture into a blog that I hope will help me get traffic to my site.
Everything I'm doing right now is an experiment.

builtbymac i'm learning as i'm using myself and following the lead of others already there. don't take my first tweets as a serious example of how you're supposed to do it.

twitter is socieal networking via microblogging. your main goal is to build a network that will be interested in you or just want you in their network. i'm finding that many people are receptive to networking on twitter but focusing on quality networking is key. you'll want to network with people/groups that will spread your name around your local area. you can use this search tool to help find people on twitter around you http://search.twitter.com/advanced

there are quite a few real estate agents on just about every social networking site. it may be wise to "follow" them b/c their tweets could inform you where housing action is. they may post about new developments or homes that are trying to sell that may need some extra help as some remodeling. A need for services from a variety of people here. You can see who they're following and who's following them and network with people you deem appropriate.

What will you tweet about? Twitter seems to be less formal than your company blog would be. Submitting a post puts your post up top on everyone's home page who's following you. You can post about any updates you add to your main website. If you come across an interesting article... post the link.

Some companies are using the service as an internal communications system. Employees can follow each other and receive company wide updates via text messages.

I don't think it'll exactly bring in leads directly. But you can network with people that may spread the word about you.

Twitter is one of the more easier platorms to network imo. I think that's why you see so many large corporations like CNN, GE, Kodak, jumping on the Twitter train. Could use them as inspiration as to how to shape your social networking plan if you choose to go that route.
