Page 1 On Google- Doesnt Mean Much

Fyi for some of you guys. Having your company organically show up on page 1 is good but what does it really mean? Will your page cause a potential customer to call you? Does your site seem “ spammy”?
Does your site come accross as a business that may be expensive?
There are many variables involved in designing a website and getting on page 1 is great but how do you make money from that??

Is that a rhetorical question?

Sounds like you are spammy fishing for leads

Maybe your marketing isn't aimed at your target.

Who is your customer? No, I don't mean "People who need windows". I mean what is the demographics of your target market?

Maybe your site doesn't 'wow' potential customers.

Re: Page 1 On Google- Doesnt Mean Much

As someone who is a web and SEO guy, and also hates spam (both spam and Spam), I've made similar statements to the OP many times here. Being on page 1 in Google search results could very well be useless. That's also why I'm able to do this for a living and have people keep paying me for it.

If someone searches for replacement windows and what they see is like a company name and then some-were the best #1 with maybe a phone number, your not getting any clicks.

Google does a pretty good job filtering out the spam. And that's the whole point of using google, people know the sites on the first page have some credibility.

Re: Page 1 On Google- Doesnt Mean Much

Getting high up on Google is certainly valuable for the right search terms but if you mean page 1 for some long term that no one types in, its useless.

You also need a wholistic approach. A clean website that breathes, a professional brand image, social proof, and visible contact methods. All little things that add up, but most contractors flop at the first one.

Share your website and keywords, I'll offer my 2 cents if you'd like.

Re: Page 1 On Google- Doesnt Mean Much

That depends on alot of things what are you on page one for? How many searches a month does that keyword have? Although you on the 1st page what percent of total traffic share are you receiving from that keyword...

Re: Page 1 On Google- Doesnt Mean Much

How about forget about SEO and run paid traffic from Facebook. If you can have more business you could ever handle from Facebook in about 3 days why would you even care about seo? Is business about having a pretty website and bragging about being on page one of google or is it about selling jobs and making money?

If you don't think your page 1 organic rankings is worth much, how about you sell it to me for a $1? I can easily find some value in that exposure.

Re: Page 1 On Google- Doesnt Mean Much

Crazy thread here. Let me add my two cents. Too much stuff on page 1 of Google. If you aren't in the top 5 or maybe even the top 3 organic you are nowhere. Second thing is if you are going to look at traffic to your web site you need to remove all traffic from out of area. I've seen clicks from around the world be 70% of total clicks or more. The comment about what people were searching for is also valid. What do you have in your title tag and what is in your description tag? Do they truly reflect your business?

As to Facebook, I am surprised to see someone say they can get more leads on Facebook in 3 days than they can consume. Facebook is pretty good for branding but my experience on converting Facebook to qualified leads is poor. Would love to hear more from that individual. By the way I do roofing and siding if that has any bearing on this conversation.

Re: Page 1 On Google- Doesnt Mean Much

Chuck, you're right about needing to be in the top 5, sort of. In probably most markets, the likes of Home Advisor, Yellow Pages, and others spend lots of money and effort to gain page 1 positions. Some people will click on those, others, like me, will avoid them because I don't want some "middle man" I want direct results. This would be especially true for roofing.

What happens next is important too. The highest ranking actual roofers (or other type of type of product or service being sought) will get clicked on. Generally speaking, probably at least 3 will be compared, but sometimes more. Each site I visit will give an instant impression. That will either get instantly back to the search results or I will stay long enough to decide whether or not you're a viable candidate.

One thing I can tell you from almost 20 years of building web sites and assessing local competition from all over the country, including roofing, is that in any given market the high ranking sites seldom have very many "good" sites. Even if all ten were actual roofing contractors, there might be two that are well done. That leaves you with plenty of opportunity to be one of the 3 that get called or considered.

Keep in mind too that Google is very smart. Although you'll get traffic from all over the globe, most of those foreign visits are trolls and spammers. Google knows the location of the person searching and will automatically show local contractors, including the "3 pack" for services like roofing.

Re: Page 1 On Google- Doesnt Mean Much

I think it's more to success than just being on the first page. What is the keyword you are ranking for on the first page? Do you have a clear call to action on your website and visible contact information? I believe doesn't have to be much, the less complex the better, it's just important that information is obvious.

Re: Page 1 On Google- Doesnt Mean Much

n short, though our data set was limited:

This study suggests that a #1 ranking on Google is 37% less valuable, at least in terms of click-through rate, than it was just two years ago. That means you can't take full advantage of gains in impressions.
Featured Snippets are associated with a bigger decrease in CTR than SERPs without a Featured Snippet – even just looking at keywords where we own the Feature Snippet. Statistical significance on this data point is 99%.
We were surprised, to say the least.
