Our Company Little Company Is Growing!

My business partner and I finally dove in. We quit our day job and went full time, before we we're just basically moonlighting and getting things set up.

We are in our third week now and our biggest sale yet happened this week! We had a couple sign with us for a 20k deck and pergola. I know for most of you this is a tiny job compared to what you usually sell. But a big step up for us. Most jobs so far we've sold are 1k to 9k... It's all going to be made of custom milled white cedar. We'll get some great photos from it for our next website (we need a new site but we need good quality content first)

We met with a couple this week and we're pricing a 2 storey addition. Pretty much every sub is needed for this one. It'll have a price tag of 100k to 150k I'm sure.

It's kind of intimidating but awesome. This what we've been wanting to do for years.

Congrats on taking the dive into full time entrepreneurship!

Take lots of pictures, preferably with a nice camera. Device cameras are improving but they don't have the physical structure of even the most basic point and shoot. I'm advising from the perspective of someone who designs web sites and great pictures help a LOT. When you do get to the web site stage, you'll appreciate this advice. I know money can be tight at the place you are now, but very good cameras can be acquired for a few hundred.

To WilsonBuiltIt, I see this is your first post. Welcome to CT. Also, I noticed you're in Lansing. I'm pretty close by being in Grand Rapids.

When things are good, dont get too excited. It will get worse.

When things are bad, dont get too excited. It will get better.

What business entity did you form? Please dont say partnership.

Make sure your draws stay ahead of the work. Especially if you have limited cash reserves. NEVER finance a customers job.

In the boom times I saw a lot of guys get taken for 100 to 200k because they were financing work and had giant recievables.

Make sure you get a handwritten testimonial letter and a picture of the project. Put it in a laminate sleeve in a three ring binder. Start building a book. I always have a copy of the main contract, and then on the back they write a testimonial, I then include a before picture and then an after picture right next to it with me and the homeowners standing by the finished work.

This is one of the most powerful selling tools you can bring out when your trying to close the deal in someones house.

Three weeks and the partnership is still working out. Hang in there. You are getting close to a record.

Just having fun. Your off to a great start.
