Online Keywords For Best Results

Online is not as simple as just throwing up a website and people will find your business and call you. Yes, having a great looking site is important. Yes, having your site loading fast is important. But the greatest vulnerability we have is our KEYWORDS & PHRASES (KWs).

A great example that I saw recently was a friend of mine that owns a horse boarding ranch in Las Vegas was getting 18,000 site visits a month for her business 'Kyle Canyon Ranch'. Traffic was impressive, but the bounce rate was through the roof. 99%+ bounce rate. (bounce is when someone arrives on your site and leaves immediately). What she found was that the only KWs that Google ranked her for was 'canyon ranch las vegas' which happens to be a popular off strip casino. So all of her traffic was for the wrong thing.

As business owners, we need to be sure to be recognized for the KWs that PEOPLE ACTUALLY USE TO FIND US. Traffic that bounces is actually detrimental to our businesses.

So what words do you need to be found for? In my business, the biggest phrase that will bring in traffic is: Reno Plumber. So I know, for sure that I need to have pages that relate to that phrase and that truly drive traffic to our site.

Little tweaks make a difference

My chiropractor says that he found a goldmine when he stopped trying to optimize for 'Reno Chiropractic' and instead went after 'Reno Chiropractor'. All his competitors were chasing 'chiropractic' when the majority real people looked for a 'chiropractor'.

Find your best keyword and go after it

Use multiple keyword tools to discover what matters for your business and test them. I start with Google Adwords Keyword Tool. I also use Spyfu to see what keywords my competitors are ranking for (and the traffic it's getting them).

What's your keyword strategy?

Optimizing your site for "Reno Chiropractor" keyword is not a strategy. This sounds more like making a generous donation to Google. I'm sure the billionaires there appreciate your contributions wholeheartedly.

If you really want to know how to use Adwords without buying Google their next yacht and buckets of caviar on your dime get Perry Marshall's Definitive Guide to Adwords. The guy is pretty much Jimmy Hendrix on the subject.

Two tips on finding the most popular search terms:

Google Auto-complete feature - start typing in your main keyword in the Google search box. The auto-complete feature gives you recommendations on search terms.. which are the most popular based on what you've typed in.

http://tools.seobook.com/keyword-tools/seobook/ - SEOBook's keyword tool (free to access, just create an account) - uses all of the old data that Google would provide on search volumes in the past. Obviously, the data is not up-to-date... but it will give you great insight into what people are/were actually searching for.

Is Reno the location / town where it's located?

for adwords, set it up for broadmatch for the first month or two and link analytics to your adwords account. You will know in short order which keywords are being queried. That is assuming you have a basic knowledge of the words used locally, to describe your business. Start with google trends and keyword planner.

Make sure you use negative keywords with Adwords too!

For example, I have a customer that sells gutter guard here in Melbourne. When I search "gutter guard melbourne" I see ads from a gutter replacement company that doesn't offer gutter guards.

They're broad-match targeting "gutter melbourne" and they haven't excluded the word "guard".

The agency managing their account is asleep at the wheel, it hasn't changed in 12 months.

Re: Online Keywords For Best Results

Well looking at your website as stand alone, without AdWords - Always keyword your service to area, ALWAYS! The main reason is that you will eventually rank organically in your area for your keyword if you put some work into SEO and your site is done correctly. Make sure you keyword it how people would search it. An example is "Plumbing Durban" instead of "Durban Plumbing". Use a keyword tool to check what results are commonly searched and use those. Google AdWords tool works fine for that. It can be the difference between 5 and 20 searches a month.

Looking at Adwords, ensure it's managed properly by location and keywording. Like the guys above said, you don't want to get caught up in clicks that aren't relevant to your service. You're throwing away money and causing a bounce rate on your website. You can either phrase or exact match with AdWords. I would highly recommend hiring a company to start you off with it. You can eventually manage it yourself, but at least they will know what they are doing to get you started.

Your Chiropractor has done well.

When dealing with adwords, I prefer to take the approach of lots of broad match keywords. Start with a low bid and then increase as you gather data and rid of the ****ty keywords.

It is very important for local businesses to include the product/service + the location. This is what people type into Google when they are looking for products or services. SEMrush is a great tool to check the search volume for your keywords, to check what are similar keywords out there, and what are the keywords your competitors use. The next step is to test the keywords you have chosen and measure.
