Newsletter Content

I received a newsletter from another contractor on another forum. He got his content from magazine articles, other newsletters, and just day to day stuff.

I want to create a more personalized newsletter. The question is it legal to use other content as long as you identify where you got it from without having to wait for permission? I am not making money directly on the newsletters. Or do you have to ask for permission on everything single article? Sometimes I can't even find where to ask for permission.

Any ideas, anyone?

Re: Newsletter Content

I write for NARI and have an article being published in the CAPS Connection. I formally give them permission to print my stuff. If you copied my article without my consent I would not go after you. It's done all the time. Since your not selling the newsletter I think your ok, make sure you give credit to the author.

Re: Newsletter Content

I've editted a number of newsletters over the years, for hobby clubs and professional trade organizations. Many times I see an article in another publication that I like. I ALWAYS ask permission. It has never been refused as the use is always for non-profit.

There is a difference between research with facts quoted (with acknowledgement) and reprinting large segments or whole content.

Ya know, if something says "copyright" it means: the exclusive legal right to reproduce, publish, sell, or distribute the matter and form of something (as a literary, musical, or artistic work)

And if it ain't a legal issue, it's a courtesy issue.
