Use your last name, unless it's something strange...

I have heard mixed things about using your last name. some say good and same say bad. I would rather not use my last name. Any ideas as far as company names?

I say DONT use your last name. It is more likely to sound like some dude and a truck over a professional company.

I want to be a general contractor. I have guys that focus on just tile, and other guys who focus on just drywall. I also have a crew that just does painting.

Re: **newbie Needs Help With Company Name

You need something professional sounding.

Hewlett Packard

Remington Steele

Allen Daniels Associates(My old company)

Noran Industries (One of my customers)

Don't go for something cutesy. We use to have another customer with the name A.G. Reat Construction Company (read it a few times). When you're quoting a big job, it may not be so funny.

One advantage of using your last name (or any name: Allen Daniels consisted of middle names) is that no one can copy it. For example, we have a supplier called MArkham Industrial Trade Supply (MITS). A competitor opened up a company called Markham Industrial Contractors Equipment and Material(MICEM). The first couldn't legally stop the second (and they tried).

I changed the name of my company from "Toronto Fence & Deck" to "Stone Mountain Fence & Deck" because I thought it would sound more professional.
Using the local city name (I live in Toronto Canada) seems to me too hokey and too restrictive.

Just my opinions.

Well Hung Drywall, Inc.

I always thought that would be a great name for a drywall company.

Professional Home Services.... ProHome Inc. Always wanted to use that name if I got into remodeling or construction. I came from a big well- known catholic family who owned a small chain of grocery stores in the 70's, so I would of been stupid not to use my family name. It's helped my business ten fold. ( Thanks Dad!). I"m sure it's used somewhere

Here is an excellent article on this topic:

http://www.entrepreneur.com/starting...icle76958.html

You can't be all things to all people.

I see dozens of guys come and go that claim they can "do it all"....

It's commical to see them at the home centers with "Specialists in Painting" and "Specialists in Kitchens and Baths" on the same truck. Well which is it?

Divide your energy and you lengthen the time it takes to get truly masterful at what you do--which is one of the first requirements to standing out in the incredibly competitive industry we work in--that is unless you want to work for peanuts...

Re: **newbie Needs Help With Company Name

Chris actually makes a good point, when I first started out I started a tree, lawn and landscape company all together because I was an arborist, a turf manager and a landscape designer. Well, I ended up closing that down after 3 years, not because of lack of business, but because I was trying to do everything for everybody plus wanting to do all the work also along with my employees because I wanted to make sure things got done right. Well, at that time I sucked at managing so many people! It was total chaos. We did pretty good sales but I was running myself ragged and not making any money because we were so inefficient. Took a break for a few years and came back as just a residential landscape designer and installer, I have 3-4 employees,10 times less headaches and less overhead. Plus I basically pick and choose the jobs I want to do. Think long and hard before you take on too much. And what , you didn't like my name suggestion?! Good luck man!

" All Phase " Construction. I have to send them while there in my head otherwise I'll forget them. That's a good one, that's probably taken too! Ya know, now I'll probably get obsessed with this. Somebody else better chime in here, I'm supposed to be working!
