Need Advice On Zero Budget Web Presence.

Plain and simple, the boss wants me to start a web page for the business using whatever is available (FB, Google Business, WP, etc...), and I've got no problem with making some time to get one setup that will be "a page"... But I have no idea on how to get it to rank locally.
Can anyone provide guidance on this?

Define zero budget are we literally talking zero dollars or just don't have a fortune to throw at it?

Literally talking zero dollars... Hence, the free platforms.
I think they can be effective, but I'm not sure if they can be as effective as a full fledged web site.

IG, FB, etc might be more relevant than a real website these days.

Nothing you can do will rank a 1 page free website for anything of meaning.

And all the effort you put into it, w/e that looks like, will have links pointing at a platform that you will abandon eventually for a real website.

You are not going to get al website address for free and you will not get any web hosting for free that I ever heard of. Even if you could get services for free building a good internet and social media presence is a full time job and I will estimate that a person needs to spend 200 hours of studying to understand what you need to do, 200 hours to get things rolling and no less than 10 hours a week for maintenance and you still may not get much reward for your invested time if you don't have what it takes.

Ok, let me reword this then... The boss wants me to use the free platforms that are available to give potential clients an idea of the services he offers... Is there a way to get these to rank locally?

Extremely tough if not impossible to do.

Are you looking for lead Gen or just a website where you can send customers to in order to have it act as a portfolio

I think the boss wants the latter... A landing place to showcase our services and previous work, that includes a "call" button.
Honestly, this was just thrust on me the other day. He's planning on expanding, and in his mind that means having a web presence... So the only thing I've got to offer is that I know more about setting out up than he does

Facebook could work but tell him to look at it as an investment not a cost.

Sure I can turn the screw by hand but I can do it quicker with a powered screwdriver

My website is mainly used to show prospects that I've already communicated with an example of what I build and my background as a builder.

Not even sure where I rank.

Start with your own broadband provider. There might be something that's already included in your package.

I think that's the ideal place to be. Over the next 10 years the amount of business coming from a google search will drop off. People will ask their 1000 Facebook "Friends" if they have a recommendation for a contractor. The obscure acquaintance will pop in to recommend you, or maybe your paid ad will pop up in their feed, based on location. Super targeted.

I donít think so. Look for google to become a version of home advisor.

Re: Need Advice On Zero Budget Web Presence.

Make sure you calculate all your time placed into the Free answer for the boss.

Eventually he will need to spend something in this area, and he will compare $0.00 to whatever number comes next, and you can bet he will ask "Why is that so expensive since we did not spend anything?"

You need to remind him that he already spent hundreds of dollars or perhaps over a thousand dollars depending on the time you spend on this (and whether this is on the clock, or are you putting in extra time at night and weekends as a courtesy which I would not suggest? ).

All I am saying is to ensure to not minimize all the time you will place into this, and it will grow, but the boss may associate no more than a penny towards it, so be cautious.

Stick with Google Business, and try to solicit some reviews. The google page with some reviews might be enough SEO juice to boost you up on the first page for local searches for your service.

Kamloops is a growing town, lots of people, lots of competition. You are better off to do the following until you can afford a website.

1. Buy the domain name. A .ca is like $15 a year or so.
2. Setup your Google My Business page. (free)
3. Setup a Facebook Fan page. (free)
4. Setup a Yelp account. (free)
5. Setup a Houzz account (free) no need for their paid stuff.
6. Post on UsedKamloops.Com (used network is big in Canada)
7. Post on Craigslist in Kamloops
8. Post on Kijiji in Kamloops
9. Get your company listing in the Canadian Company Capabilities Directory (good .Gov link) and it's free as well.
10. Acquire some reviews from happy customers on your new profiles.

If you drive the traffic to an active Facebook Fan Page you'll probably get some leads/work coming in. From there hire someone to build your website.

Good Luck!
