What about NOT sending a Christmas card and instead sending a card for other holidays like labor day or memorial day. Like you said they get overwhelmed with cards this time of year. That's exactly what I do.

I say send whatever is appropriate for the time. I had a box or two of leftover cards and decided to send them over fliers just to see what the response was. I'll follow up next month with the fliers depending upon response. Gotta keep trying, you never know what may turn out to be magic!

Re: Marketing Pro: Will Give Back To Community

You are right Teetor. I might be passing up some deals by not sending out December Christmas cards, but I am all about return on investment since I don't have a large pile of cash to play with. I have to maximize my profits from a little investment, and that means NOT spending money when everyone else does and that also means SPENDING more money when others aren't.

I have found the BEST time to advertise is when you are busy... and the reason is: Your competitors usually are equally as busy, sometimes too busy to advertise. This translates into me asking for a higher premium from my customers and me also having more freedom to pick and choose my customers.

It never hurts to get your name out there.. I will sometimes park one of my trucks in the area I just sent my cards out to. If they see that name all the time they will become interested, and think of you when something comes up.

If you look at my plan it averages less than $ 20 per week and everthing goes exactly where I want it to go. Small jobs can go to $35K and lead to much larger ones.

One year there was a hail storm and on the weekend I drove through some hard hit sub divisions at low speeds as if I was looking for an address. I would occasionally park and listen to the radio for a few minutes infront of someones house who was hard hit, then drive to the other side of the sub division and do the same thing.

We got a few calls. Probably not enough to waste 4 hours driving in circles, literally. Then again I had nothing else to do.
