Independent Contractor For Sales

Hi I am considering hiring an independent contractor for sales. Has anyone done this? If so, can you tell me the pro's and cons? I am a start up and wish to avert the higher premiums and red tape associated with hiring an employee for now.

Thanks,

Mel

They will have no loyalty to you. They might even steal sales from you if they can make a larger commission by selling the sale to one of your competitors.

Or are you saying you want a salesman working for you but you prefer to pay him/her like a sub instead of an employee? There is very little red tape if you hire a payroll service. They charge about $30 per pay period. I pay my employees twice a month thus $60 a month. That's an easy cost to stomach especially since I know I have no burden or responsibility for with holdings etc... if they make a mistake it's on them to fix.

Re: Independent Contractor For Sales

I currently serve as an independent rep for several contractors. I brought another salesman on board last week to take some of the burden off of me. And I'm training another one next week.

It works very well for the contractors. The calls are directed to my office. So they don't need to be answering calls/ returning calls all day. They don't have to pull off a job to go give an estimate. They can go home at the end of the day like "normal" people. Etc.

The leads are generated by a marketing co-op we have and the contractors themselves. The salesman gets a 10% commission.

How does it go? Where once I was blind, now I see!

Or is it "when" once I was.....

Paul

Paul,

It's going well. Like all new things, progress is often slower than anticipated, but you keep plugging along. I'm working with 11 contractors now, and I'm selling for most of them. That's why I'm bringing on some salesmen.

New ideas are usually laughed at (Henry Ford is my favorite example). But he who laughs last laughs best.

Id love to get a marketing grad to get me appointments for estimates
and pay a flat rate per booking, plus a commission percentage on project total

I was thinking of going to local college and ask someone in faculty to get word out to soon-to-be grads to gain experience and pay
