How Many Meta Keywords Are You Using For Your Website?

It seems like all these "SEO experts" are all over the board on this subject. One website says keep it under 50, another says anything more than 10 keywords dilutes the effect of your most important keywords. So I go to my largest competitiors website to see how many he's got and what they are and he's got over 150 different keywords and has every single town within 50 miles listed within the Meta tag which I had heard is a big no no (could get you blacklisted). Yet he is often 1st or 2nd on google rank. Since it seems like there is no "right" answer, I thought I'd see what you guys are doing.

By the way, for those of you who have helped me with this SEO project which I started about a month ago, I'm starting to see the results. I went from not even being able to find my listing on most google searches to being on the first or second page for the majority of the keywords that I have been targeting. I still have a lot of content work to do but it feels good to see results so quickly. Thanks for your help.

OG,

It seems everyone is all over the place because MANY different approaches will work to get traffic to your site as long as:

the keywords are relevant to what the searcher is looking for.

If you are on the front page, you are doing better than most.

No major search engine today claims to read the meta tag keywords which has raised the question of whether they are still needed at all.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meta_el...ords_attribute

Put a few in there, relevant to the page and subject.

Content is key. Major search engines love natural relevant text. This is why blogs are aleays so well indexed. Full af text about the topic and regular updated content. Do your best to match this formula and you will move up quickly. The challange for you is it also has to be an effective sales pitch.

Re: How Many Meta Keywords Are You Using For Your Website?

Here's a news flash for everyone: Google does not index the Meta Keyword tag! So, it really doesn't matter how many keywords your put in there--at least to Google. The keyword tag is of very little importance to Yahoo or MSN either. It is a factor, but a very small one. Nevertheless, I always recommend that a website contain the core keywords for their market niche. Not a ton of them, but enough to cover your niche with the most obvious keywords. If you've spent months and tons of money developing your long tail keyword list, there is no way I would put it in your meta tag. Remember that your competition can see that anytime. So, just use the basic keywords. And you don't need to use every city name or county name or whatever in your keyword list.

Oh, one more thing . . . don't use other people's trademarked names in your keyword tag--unless your brother in law is a lawyer. There have been numerous law suits over this issue.
