How to go to the top of google local in under 1 month
I've lurked on these boards for quite a while now, and have learned a lot about the painting industry, websites, and SEO from you guys.
So as repayment I'll tell you how I went from being ranked somewhere below 200th place to the top spot on google local in under 2 weeks.
It's easy and only takes one day.
1) Go to your google local ad, and click on the edit function. When you get there fill out every bit of it.
2) Provide an address in the city you want to advertise in along with the zip code.
3) Provide 4 phone numbers one being your fax line.
4) They provide a section where you can list a coupon. Provide the coupon!
5) Fill out the payments accepted field.
6) Fill out the hours of operation
7) In the product and services field? Use it as a keyword bedding area.
8) Get a customer to go provide a review. ( I need to do this)
9) They provide an area where you can put up 8 images. Do it even if you're using stock images like me. You can take them down and put up your own images when you get them.
10) Last but not least, if you have a video you can load that up to.
I did all these things except the video, and 2 weeks later a friend that owns one of the largest painting services in the area calls one morning and asks.. Did you know that you're number 1 on google local now? How did you do that?
I almost fell over

I know what Google is, but what's Google Local? and what's a Google Local ad? It sounds like you're giving good advice, but I can't get beyond step one.

I'm having trouble uploading the photos; they don't specify a size but uploads will fail because the photo is "too big". They also seem to only display photos in a 3x5 aspect ratio? Almost all my pics are shot in 5x3

I had to use Microsoft Image composer to "digitally" re size mine. Google didn't like them either.
You need to use a digital compression tool maybe.

One other thing! Make sure to search on google with the term that brings up most of your competitors in the local business field on google. See what key words are highlited that they're using to drive themselves to the top. You'll need those words too!
Here's an example of mine coming up with the search term "Painter Louisville" if I use "Painters Louisville" Certa Pro is number 1 and I'm number 2.
Pay attention to the highlited words.

Maybe I should have used image composer on that image of the google search. Sorry if I've knocked your screens out of Kilter, I hate horizontal scrolling.

I did the same thing, however out of Canada...
People can type in "Painter Surrey" or "Painting Surrey" etc... and I come up first.
The only problem is... it doesn't generate any phone calls whatsoever LOL
Ok ok I'm lying... a fellow called me yesterday asking if it was worth it to place my ad on there. I simply replied... well it's free.. why wouldn't it be? And after all... you just found it didn't you?
He then explained that someone is trying to charge him 349.99 to place his ad for him!
I quickly gave him instructions to do it himself.
Still don't see this as a great advertising option ... pretty cool though, none the less.

When people search, they see you there at the top of the local results with your phone number showing. Then if you appear in the top few organics, they see you there without having to scroll Two times now they see your name on the same page!
If you have an adwords campaign and are bidding high enough to be placing 3rd or 4th, then they see you there also.
They see you 3 places with one search string and all of them are together. There's the key to advertising right there.
BE SEEN! Appearance is important. If people see you 3 times and your competitor once, they will assume that you are more successful. Every body wants to be with the winner

I don't get how you maintain 'at the top' advertising since so many others also advertise -- don't you eventually slip down?

I would have to agree with you that yes. Eventually one could slip down due to the efforts of their competitors, in regards to them changing their ads also.
Nobody said Internet rankings were forever.. And I'm glad of that, cuz if they were I'd still be below the first page somewhere!

Tks

Yes, it can take longer than 24hrs sometimes. Keep watching. It could even be a couple of weeks.
If I were you I would call or go visit a few of your favorite past customers and ask them to give you a good review.
Help walk 'em through the process of reviewing (do one yourself on one of your favorite local non-competitors to get a feel for it.
I think having several reviews will really set you apart in most markets.
