How Did You Find A Salesman??

I'm looking to hire a salesmen. Most likly i am looking for a part time salesmen. What is the best place to find one. Career builder.com, monster.com, local newspaper? I have 2 months to find one. What is my best course of action? I like to know your results with these high priced internet job sites, before i lay out 400 for a ad.

Thanks
Matt

Matt,
Are you ready for a salesman?

What are your reasons for wanting to hire one, other then the obvious to bring in more $$$.

Do you not have enough time?

Re: How Did You Find A Salesman??

Cole- One reason for wanting a salesman is time. I think there has to be more to life than working 75-80 hrs a week.

However the main reason is my age. I'm 20 years old. I just became a fiberglass pool dealer and i am directing my marketing towards doing complete back yard projects. Pool, pavers, fence, irrigation, plantings, decks, cabanas etc.

Basically i am going after large dollor jobs. I know if i hire a older salesman with alot more experience selling, it will do more for my business then anything else.

A few weeks ago i went to San Antonio to met with the pool manufacture. I spent a day with their local dealer. Their local dealer is finshing there first year in business. They already put 65 pools in the ground. In there first year! You know why? The company hired a salesman that new the industry inside and out who has been selling pools for 15 years.

I'm not looking to do 65 pools next year. But i know there has to be someone out there that can do a better job selling than i can.

Promote someone from within if possible. if not ask friends. If not ask suppliers. If not start placing adds in trade journals.

Matt,
I can totally understand where you are coming from.

Good luck and the next time you are in Texas, let me know and we can try to meet and put face to name.

I had a good time in texas. I didn't do much site seeing though. After i spent 3 days with the pool manufacturer i was anxious to get back home to start putting what i learned to work. I was also tired of sleeping in hotels! On the way down i did get lost in Dallas for about a hour. I could not belive all the damn highways and over passes!

Yeah, Dallas is pretty confusing if you do not know the major loops etc..

Next time you are in the area, let me know.

Re: How Did You Find A Salesman??

Monster has worked great for us. We get a lot of resumes and then weed them out. We will interview only the ones that look great on paper. Out of 4 or 5 interviews we will usually find 1 good one. We then have him profiled to find out if they think we should hire him as a salesman. It's a fairly long process and we sometimes will lose a guy because of that but we have found that it costs a lot more to hire the wrong guy...........Hire very slowly and fire very very quickly. It's all about having the right people on your team.

Re: How Did You Find A Salesman??

if your looking to save time with a salesman it may not work that way remember they are always crying for leads always calling you for advice info permission whatever! sometimes it can be demanding. most are never satisfied well just put it this way " like having your wife working with ya all day" ! some may like it others will never come to the office and start installing again

Re: How Did You Find A Salesman??

There is no such thing as a good part-time salesman unless he is retiring.

A good salesman is going 24x7, so let him add your time onto his existing schedule.

Find a good salesaman is a similar industry so you can benefit from his contacts and background. Somehow, he should get leads without spending too much of his valuable selling time. A good saleman needs some leads and direction without cramping his style.

Make sure you pay him enough to sell for you over the other company he is working with when there is an option.

Re: How Did You Find A Salesman??

great point from Dick. Part Time Sales People = Half Ass Results.

Since you're jsut starting out - you're going to have to give a good salesguy great reasons to come work from you. Anyone with experience will ask tough questions (in regards to leads, volume of work you can sell, what others have done, etc.). Ones that do not are either poor salespeople, or have no experience.

Many times, you can reorganize your day and put less valuable tasks onto someone else - which can free up your time do sales. Remember - nothing matters unless revenue is coming in.

Before you spend any money, try Craigslist. Its free. Practice writting ads and see which ones get you the best response. I NJ, they all work careerbuilder, Monster, NJ jobs , Be very descriptive about who you want to hire and what you expect from them.

Re: How Did You Find A Salesman??

Agree re craigslist. In the metro washington DC market CL charges $25.00 for help wanted listings. I used three listings over week, and achieved my target -- 150 resumes. This is the number I've learned through experience I need to find one truly good candidate. We did.
(Note we offered a salary so you might need to advertise more/longer if you are looking for someone on pure commission.)
