How A Contractor Can Become The Expert

In his seminal book, Influence, renowned author and psychologist and author, Robert Cialdini proved that people are heavily influenced by authority figures in our society. All else being equal, consumers will buy from an authority figure. So how does a contractor who works with his hands all day become an authority figure?

Luckily, the answer is easy. Think for a second? What are you very good at?

- Maybe you make better angle cuts than most carpenters
- Perhaps you are a plumber and your tub connections never leak
- You have a way of wiring outlets that is better than most.

Write It Down

Contrary to what many people fear, writing an article will not divulge all of your secrets and take away your income. Instead, putting your knowledge on paper will establish you as the expert and differentiate yourself from the rest. Many metropolitan markets are averaging over 400 Craigs List posts per day. What makes you different?

But I am Not a Professional Writer!!
Neither am I, but trust me for a second. Take what you know and write it down in the most thorough way you can. Write like you talk and reveal why what you know makes sense. If you are having trouble, have your significant other or a friend help you. Ok, now you have your thoughts on paper or the computer, but it still isn't top quality. Now log on to guru.com or elance.com and post an ad that you want to hire a writer to proofread youre article and spruce it up so it is of professional quality. This is going to cost a lot less than you think, about the cost of lunch at a restaurant. It will be a great feeling to have your ideas in a professional quality article.

Ok, I Have An Article, Now What?
Go to Ezinearticles.com and distribute the article. Its free. The most important part of the article is the resource box at the bottom of the article. Make sure you fill out your name and give your website address. Search Engines love articles and even if no one ever reads youre article, you will be giving a huge boost to your search engine rankings. If you do this 50 or 100 times, you will get an enormous uptick in website traffic, I promise. John Reese, the preeminent expert on web traffic has said that if he could give people one piece of advice for improving their web traffic, it would be to write articles. In a perfect world, you will write articles, distribute them to ezinearticles.com and your search engine rankings will improve. Once people get to your site and read the article, they will see that you are an expert and you will have that much of an advantage on the other 400 people posting on Craigslist every day.

Great Things Can Happen
I did this for a while for my modular home business and my search engine rankings really improved. This was a great investment of time and I was really happy. Then one day I got a call from a television producer. He had read an article on green building I had written and asked if I wanted to be featured on CNN. I said ok. What do you think that has done for my business. Please take my advice and write some articles.
