Didn't get very far into it,
but installation is misspelled
every time I saw it.
Seriously, type your copy into
a spell checker before you
put it up on your site.
Sorry.

Re: How Bad Is It? Website Review.

Give more thought to a better tag line--something that speaks to a benefit I'll enjoy by doing business with you. I can't stand generic "touchy-feely" tag lines. It may roll off the tongue but it's weak.

Put keywords in all your page titles. You've not even begun to do any SEO, I know. But it's easy and basic as a start.

Lots of grammar problems. "Design staffs"... for example. "..can custom design solutions to fit you needs space and style." (lots of bad punctuation, as well.) You've got to show attention to detail by getting the details right on your site.

You're writing to sound important but it's all fluff. For example: "As a craftsman based company, we have the flexibility to maximize our combined skills to accomplish the highest quality custom millwork."

What does this do for ME as a prospect???? It's not bad... and better than nothing... but far less than you could have. CONNECT with a reader and hook them in with language that connects with their needs. I don't need "maximized combined skills"... I need an f-ing beautiful home than makes my friends and family jealous. See the difference? Get specific. Think about all the reasons people hire you for what you do and what the end need is that you're serving. I don't want bookcases... I want practical storage solutions. I don't want wainscotting... I want a house that looks sophisticated and expensive. Etc, etc.

I have no idea who your target market is from your site. Homeowners? GCs? Both? If you don't connect with me and my needs in a few seconds, you're going to lose me as a prospect. I'll click on to the next person on the search results.

Go back to those projects and take better pictures. You do nice work but it's lost in those grainy, poorly lit photos. If you want people to get that you do nice work, show them nice photos. Digital cameras are dirt cheap these days and it's getting easier and easier to take decent pictures yourself.

Also, add some captions describing the projects, what you did, the materials used, challenges, etc.

The overall look of the site doesn't communicate "craftsman". I realize you're using a template as a start but the skyline photo is out of place.

I hope my comments don't come across as too derogatory. I built my own site as well, and I can appreciate the work that goes into it.

There are three elements you'll need to master:

Getting it to look right... layout and design
Getting it to read right... active writing, proper grammer, copy that connects
Getting it found... SEO, keywords, etc.

The path up the mountain is steep...if it's not steep, it's not a mountain.

Best of luck.

Re: How Bad Is It? Website Review.

That is not negative at all, just detailed things that need to be corrected. Very detailed responses are what I need, and don’t worry I have thick skin. I am much worse on my self. Those are some of the things I have been looking at that really bother me. I don't like this site; I am just not sure if I can do much better or if I need to hire someone. But if I can do it myself that is another 1.5k I can spend on other advertising.

Re: How Bad Is It? Website Review.

Geez, it's not that bad. You're lucky that you probably don't have too many direct competitors. There are a hundred times more contractor sites than millwork sites. The fact that you even have a site puts you at the front of the pack.

You want to see a bad millwork site: http://www.imperialdesign.on.ca/
Every time I have to use it, I prepare myself with valium.

I do think you should take better photos. That was a bit of a deal killer for me. They are all washed out and green. Very disturbing. They look like haunted house pictures.

Re: How Bad Is It? Website Review.

Couple things I see. You need a proof reader to go over the wording and structure. That proof reader needs to be someone who has not written the material for the site. There are many problems with incorrect wording such as 'you' rather than 'your', commas in the wrong place or instead of periods. You pluralize your company name sometimes and sometime you don't. You show no address or email contact form on your contact page. No link at the bottom of pages to get back up to the top or links to other pages.

Specifically, the first section on your home page doesn't read well. Sacramento Millworks works with clients.... Change 'works' to collaborates or some other word.

As for the "Why Custom" on the home page. You say you can create projects to exact specifications OR custom design solutions to fit ....that says basically the same thing.

Keep at it since it does take time. Now that you have a basic site up, spend time improving one page at a time; don't try to do it all at once. Start looking for a good SEO guy who can help you seed your text with the correct words and explore options like Adwords. Good luck and be patient.

The site design isn't that great. It should be obviously apparent within the first few seconds what your site is about. I didn't get millwork at all.
It looks professional. Just not construction orriented, moreso that of a financial service or lawfirm. Need to work on the theme.

Elance has some good freelancers on there that you could post your project for a bid.

Not too bad. Looks like you do nice work but the camera you took the pictures with isn't doing your work the justice it deserves. Just something I noticed.

Hey I'm building a website as I write this so you can knock mine when it's up, ok?
