Home Depot

What does it take to get hooked up as a sub for the depot??

They are taking all the work in area. So we can't beat them so must join them.

One person told me once its like a 8 step process and the want all your business records and do all kinds of background checks?

Re: Home Depot

People around here are scared to give out down payments to contractors. I hear contractor horrior stories from 50% of our customers. Thats why everyone is going to home depot. I priced a roof last week for $5k she told me she got a few other quotes around my number but Depot wanted $10k that is crazy.

What do you guys think if I offered "you don't pay until the job is done"

If you are not part of the statistics that your customers are concerned about, then you shourd get every job you bid on. Being ligitimate and professional should give you a shoe in, if 50% of your compeditiors are crooks.

Re: Home Depot

We get about 80 percent of the jobs we bid on. But I want to be doing more jobs. I increased advertising this year by 2000 percent and I have not even noticed a change in the amount of jobs. Im thinking everyone is going to home depot they are putting out some serious advertising around here.

Re: Home Depot

Another bad thing is there is people who have not gotten robbed by the shady contractors. The people that will go with the lowest price instead of the time. I bid a job last week...

Roof 10 sqaures all new
Remove old 20 x 20 deck build new one add new footings
change out back door
all new gutter all around

We bid $16,000 that is the lowest we could go and still make money

This guy showed us the other guys bid $10,000

Re: Home Depot

Home Depot is the Ultimate Evil Empire!!!

First off they sell all the supplies and have workshops that allow HO to think they can do anything. They give such crappy info at the "Pro Desk" that it makes a retarded monkey look intelligent.

Then when the homeowner buys all the stuff and screws up their house they are there to underbid us and fix the problem they created.

I think it's time to redo or add to your contract. I would add something along the lines of "beware of shotty contractors" and "lowest price doesn't always mean best deal". And then expound on those ideas. Make the statement about legit and non-legit contractors, etc. Get a HUGE list of references and testimonials and pictures to show potential customers. Do you have a website, truck lettered, etc.? Website is probably one of the best forms of getting people interested. IMO

Basically if people are winning over price, then compete with other issues they may be lacking in....FIGHT with words

Re: Home Depot

You'll just have to ride out the storm. Home Depot has no control over their in house employees. How on earth will they control sub-contractors? Most of us have been called in to repair the other guys mistakes. We will end up fixing theirs too. It is just a matter of time before the public realizes that Home Depot is not the way to go.
Just be the best contractor you can be. Offer great customer service, awsome work at decent pricing and I always like to throw in a little extra at no charge. for example I spray paint ugly register covers. I have to remove them anyway when I'm painting. Only takes a couple of minutes and $1 can of spray paint to make them pretty again. But the customer appreciates the little things and will tell their friends.
