Google Local's New Dashboard

I was going to file this under our new Websites and SEO topic but you can list your business even without a website so it makes sense to put this here.

Google wants more / better quality business listings in it's Google Local search results so it's built a new dashboard to help you list your business. If you're not familiar with Google Local, these are the search results that pop up in Google maps or in Google search when people look for a service within a specific area such a "Orlando Painters". They are free listings that bring in leads for your business.

You can sign up for the new Google Local here: http://www.google.com/local/add

During the sign up process Google will verify your business address by mailing you a pin code and verify your phone number by calling you. It's a bit more complicated than signing up for an email address but it helps you protect your company's identity and is well worth the trouble.

Once verified you'll have access to new tools that help you evaluate how many times your business appears during search results (aka Impressions) and how many times people are clicking for more info (aka Actions).

Another report allows you to see what search terms your business is showing up for and from what locations.

I didn't get to play with it but there also seems to be an area to add coupons for your services. This may be a great way to standing out form the other results.

As the yellow pages fade away it's nice to see more and more of these free options showing up online. I'm hoping this new dashboard system leads to more exposure for everyone.

One final thought. If you've ever used Google local for looking up restaurants you'll see that they are slowing pushing their way into giving companies ratings for their services. I think part of this push to get more local results is also tied into wanting to compete with Angies List and Yelp long term. There's no way around it and I think there's more value than risk but just know that Google Local does rate businesses.

Let me know how it goes

I have been using this service for about a year now and get at least 3-4 calls per week from it.

That's not a screenshot from my account. Just an example I found on Flicker. I have no idea who that belongs to. Sorry.
