Google Just Offered Me A Free Website?

So i just got an email from Google My Business today offering me a free website. Has anyone had any experience with this? I'm assuming it's something new?

We were planning on setting up a website in the near future, should I set this one up with Google now and then later set up a real one?

Will having this Google site hurt the real one when we get it up?

Just wanted to get some opinions on it before I blindly rush into it....

I doubt it was actually Google (THE Google) that called you.

Scammers and spammers always say they're calling from Google. Maybe their boilerroom operation is on Google St. Or the building is nicknamed Google.

It was an email, not a phone call, I'm pretty sure it's legit. My wife got all excited and started setting it up, I just wanted to make sure it wouldn't hurt us down the road.

We already have a Google listing, it sounds like something to go along with/ compliment the listing?

That's my take on it. Will likely see good response from B2B, because Google is so pervasive.

I have other interests, including small town/small business district revitalization, combined with satellite "millennial" residential projects, so I expect to have one up & running "some time" in the near future.

But I have NO clue how using a Google site would be for a typical contractor business.....

...but if you were Google, wouldn't you make sure that Google web sites got preference in search results over say... GoDaddy?

Re: Google Just Offered Me A Free Website?

It is a 1 Page site with "very limited" marketing. It is designed to capture as much as the SMB (Small to Medium Business) marketplace that has absolutely no website presence. Nothing to be compared with a real contracting website that has an About Page, Services Pages, Location Pages, Portfolio Pages, etc., and being optimized for inbound marketing. But it is real.

Thanks, so would you say it's worth the time invested to set it up, or should we not even bother?

I signed up for Google+ last year.

Now I constantly get the calls with the recording:

"Important: You must act now to set up your Google account........."

Annoying. Phone numbers from all over the US. My account is already set up.

Now, I save the numbers, add them to my contacts as "junk" or "googlebot."

Maybe this belongs in the TIH thread.

For any contractor who is ready to be in business and focus on real marketing, then the answer is No.

But I can bet there will be hundreds of contractors who will create their 1-Page, Fast-Free Google Page, and then come here to this forum to ask for Free help on how to optimize it .... you can count on it ...

Thanks, I probably won't waste any time on it then.
Once we get a breather in our packed schedule this summer, we need to take a serious look at a website.

Agree 100% with MOTB, you're going to be very disappointed very quickly. It's worth the time and money to get a real site built.

Re: Google Just Offered Me A Free Website?

Maybe they are the same arseholes who call me half a dozen times a day telling me I need to update my google listing. They are entirely clueless bunch of jerks out to waste a contractors time with the old bait and switch tactic.

Nowadays I'll entertain myself jacking with these dummies from time to time. I keep them on the phone for as long as possible with no intention of buying a darn thing from them. Payback is a biatch.
