Re: Finding A Salesman

Wow, this is a simple question, but those of us with some grey hairs and years of experience know that the answers are anything but simple (yet the best approach may indeed be surprisingly easy).

The scale of the issue can be described this way: I belonged to a networking group only open to businesses that prove they have significant volume 20 or more employees, export orientation, and experience. Consultants marketing their services presented themselves to the group with an exercise -- without forcing the matter, to find out what the biggest single issue (problem) they have for which they would like to find the solution.

You guessed it: Finding salespeople!

The reason for the problem is that anyone who is truly great at sales can easily 'open' a business (including becoming your direct competition, yes it has happened to me). And it is equally true that most successful businesses can use more sales resources, so they all are looking for a finite supply. That means many of the people out there 'looking' for sales work are truly bad -- if you are lucky enough to find anyone looking.

Sometimes, however, simple works best. Just put an ad in your local newspaper, on craigslist (if it is in your area), and of course don't be afraid to spread the word around town. My best reps have come that way.

(Now should you pay salary, commission, or both ... that opens another big can of worms.)

Re: Finding A Salesman

We have had the best luck using Monster.com
We have tried other avenues but keep coming back to Monster.
The problem as I see it is training (Not Hiring)
I wouldn't even think of hiring a salesman If you don't have a good training plan and a good sales manager on board.

We pay them $300 per week for the first 2 weeks. After that they are straight commision 10%

Training............week 1 & 2 in a classroom from 10am to 3pm mon - thur.
3pm till whenever they will run leads with either the sales manager or a sales rep.
(they are only there to watch)
Friday they will visit ongoing jobs and meet the installers. We will have them measure the job and come up with a figure........(How many sq. and how much it should cost)
