Ok, I am going to fan everybody on this forum. But I have to say, after a year of facebook and 2000 customers, I think we only have ten fans on facebook. I did put it right on our main page. The thing I wonder, is that I am a fan in facebook of ten or fifteen things, like 'Women bringing you Sandwiches' and 'nuns who dress laptop computers in dollclothes and smoke pipes' but I don't visit them much.

Does anybody visit fan pages? Maybe it is just me.

I started by getting close network folks to recommend the page(my own network + my office manager). We got to just about 100 that way.

I invested in a PPC campaign with FB for about 4-5 weeks. The ad promoted a before & after project progression video of a modern kitchen renovation we had recently finished. I had a locally targeted version and a national version.

The local version didn't do jack squat. The national version got us to about 270 before I paused it about 3 weeks ago. Since then, I've been generating new fans steadily with no other input but content updates.

Content is king. Google is now indexing social network content (Social Search: http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2009/...-search-i.html ) and real time content: http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2009/...-time-web.html .

With social networking, it can't ALL be about you or it's going to seem SPAMY. Certainly include project updates, photos, etc.--but also include non-YOU related content your fan base will have an interest in.

I highly recommend short video montages of your portfolio photos. YouTube is the 2nd largest search engine now--and all of these things layered together (Facebook, YouTube, Forum Posts, Blogs, etc. etc.) overlap and build on one another to improve your organic search engine placement.

My own site has seen an 80% increase in traffic over the last month. It's hard to say what are all the factors behind that--but I strongly believe all of these things have helped.
