I am going to try a FB page between college bowl games this week. If it's free then what the heck. Also am curious about the SEO post. Is it valid? My biggest problem in technology and there are no kids that live around here to help so I might have to PM somebody with tech savvy.

Re: Facebook Marketing

A business fan page is just a page, not an account.

You need an account to become a friend (or fan) of someone.

You're NOT supposed to make a personal page for business.

Therefore, no, your business page cannot become a friend or fan of anything else.

The SEO value of social networking will only increase over time. Google has started to index Twitter accounts/posts and Facebook content.

Facebook is very intuitive to setup. You should be able to figure most of it out on your own. Start with a personal FB page. I started mine (under my own name, not company name) a good while ago and was updating it with project photos as well as personal content. This is not ideal, for all of the reasons above and more.

Once you have a personal page, setting up a fan page is a piece of cake:

Thanks Chris, just set up a personal page not without controversy, my wife looked over my shoulder and decided I'm trying to look up old girlfriends, therefore no uploaded picture of myself.

Thanks for the links I'll go to them and figure it out!

Re: Facebook Marketing

Thanks Angus - What took you so long to answer?

Is it better to set the personal page with your real name or not?

About a year ago I set a personal page up just to see some family pics my cousin put on his page. Over the next few months I got about 200 "friend" requests. Half from people I don't know - the other half from people I left behind (Chicago mob connections) when I relocated 30 years ago.

I'd truly like to avoid the "catching-up" part - Any thoughts?

Re: Facebook Marketing

The 'catching up' factor is hard to avoid. Just set up your personal page to be private. That way folks will know you're a real person, but you shield your personal photos and content from those you'd rather not have access.

Eventually you'll probably have clients who want to "friend" you (I've had more than a few make the request). For that reason, it's a good idea to keep your personal page clean.

Re: Facebook Marketing

FB makes it a little hard to use a fake name. Perhaps you have a nickname you can use?

Also, you can set the profile to be completely private where no one can see anything about you other than the name and profile pic.

BTW, I have done exactly this. I do not have my real name on my FB account. No Spilotro can track me down either! Besides, if I haven't talked to someone in 20 years, I really have no need to start talking to them now.

Re: Facebook Marketing

If you go "private" can you invite a few friends in? You know the ones you don't owe money to - or are you just opening up to the "catching-up" stuff by doing that?

Going private only refers to what non-friends can see. Your profile pic and name will always be visible to the masses. What they can see from there is up to you. Once someone is a friend, they have access to your profile. You are able to invite anyone in.

Both parties need to agree to be friends. And there's the ever-important block feature!

Re: Facebook Marketing

I'm sorry I'm checking this thread now. I have a regular FB page here: http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?...00000513189784

However, I would like to set up a business page. Where is the link to set up a free page for the business?

Up to this point I've been pimping my business out to all my FB friends. They must be like WTF?? LOL

You can set it up so that friends of friends can see it and also the people on your friends list can invite others to become members. I also read that you need to post something every day or two to keep it current in everyone's pages. I have a link to my webpage listed also. I'm not sure that people who read it will become customers, rather I'm hoping that by keeping my name out there they will mention it when they talk to someone needing work done who may or may not be on Facebook.
That's the idea.

Re: Facebook Marketing

I was going to post something regarding FB, Twitter, Linked In and such. There are so many ways to market yourself these days. I went so far as to create a MySpace page as well. You just never know where you get a customer. It may be free, but it also takes time to set it up and to update it, so if you have a tech savvy kid under the roof, this might be a good way to get them to do a little work for the company.
Initially, I couldn't figure out how to create a fan page, so I created a regular page (I have several emails, so this wasn't a problem). Once I made contacts through my biz page, and some good ones mind you, I created the fan page and invited all my contacts or friends. It made more sense to have a biz page other than my personal page, because, quite frankly, my personal life, is, well, PERSONAL. So, I feel like the biz page creating a fan page is better. That way you can receive emails on your page, whereas you can only receive posts on a fanpage. I hope I am not confusing anyone.
To confuse everyone more, I can actually log into both personal and biz pages at once if I am using two separate browsers. That way i can keep up with both things at once, but I am hitting Alt+Tab a lot going between windows.
BTW, I "fanned" some of you while I was going through these posts. I hope that we can connect other places as well.

So, you're saying it's be better to make a business page, rather than just a personal page with a fan page?

On the sign up page, there's a link to "Create a Page for a celebrity, band or business." That's the one to sign up at, you think?

No, that is not the case. Oh, you can do it in this manner but you cannot create a business or fan page or whatever you want to call it without having an account first. If you use the "Create a Page for a celebrity, band or business." first, FB will make you create a personal page first anyway.

So the method that Quality Counts uses is actually a violation of FB TOS. You are not supposed to use a personal page for a business. If it becomes found by FB, they will delete it. All the time it took you to create the page and all of your friend connections will be gone.
